yes, your case will be sent to the NBC where it is bundled along with your N-400 and sent to the local field office of your domicile where you will b e called in for a Combo(I-751/N-400) interview

I suggest you call the normal USCIS support line. You shouldn't have any expectations going into the call as the rep will merely state what you already know about your status. They'll also likely tell you that after 20 months of wait you can submit a formal inquiry into your case. The reason I make this suggestion is that exactly 1 day after I made such a call, the local office scheduled my wife for an interview. If this is a coincidence, it looks suspicious. My guess is that the call is logged into the case file and someone at the local office might have seen it that day, and picked it up for action. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that.

Once you apply for N-400, they send your ROC file over to NBC. Then this and your N-400 file are both kept together and sent to your local office. Depending on how backlogged your local office is, you then have to wait until they get to your case.

They then call you for an interview, which is usually a joint interview (even if they tell you it's an N400 interview, come prepared for both, with your USC spouse). Usually they will then conduct both interviews one after another.

They have to approve the ROC before they can get to your N400.

So if you did apply for N400, then I wouldn't expect an approval for ROC right now while other April filers get approved. Instead, you are now on your local offices's timeline.

Is this accurate? I filed N400 also and if this is true, I'm beginning to wish that I didn’t. Since the I-751 has to be approved before the N400, why would they make the process even longer by making you wait to adjudicate the two together? I can understand this for local offices that are working quickly. But not for offices like Los Angeles which are very slow. Seems like a weird way of doing things.

When I chose to go this route, I was aware that this would slow down my process to a 10 year green card, but I went ahead with it anyway because it speeds up my over-all timeline to citizenship. Because if I had not applied, I would now be getting my ROC approved, then applying for N400 and waiting the whole 8 more months that it's taking my local office nowadays. However, by applying for n400 back in March, I managed to begin that 8 month wait period 4-5 months early, thereby speeding up my overall USCIS journey.

It all comes down to personal choice. If you would rather have that 10 yr green card sooner, then yes it's better not to apply for N400 (unless you know that your local office is faster than the remainder of your ROC wait period).

But if you don't care to have the 10 yr card and are willing to be in limbo waiting period a few months longer and skip directly to citizenship, then applying for n400 is the way to go.

[Note: Usually they do hold both interviews together, and approve the ROC before n400; but that doesn't mean that they process ROC, send you the card, then move forward with oath ceremony. After approving both they go straight to oath ceremony, so you never actually see a 10 yr card. Hence adjudicating both together doesn't really slow down your N400 process. It just kind of puts a pause on ROC]

Are you guys sure that whenever somebody applies for N400 while ROC is pending, the ROC is going to be tied with N400?

In my case, I applied for ROC on April 2017 like you guys, and for N400 on April 2018. But my case is been the same, no transfers, no updates. Most of us regardless of N400 eventual application are in the same situation kinda in the limbo waiting for the 10 yr GC as CSC seems to be moving along. Only 5 people out of 40 on the spreadsheet have been approved so far.

I think they handle cases separately and if N400 comes first, then they recall ROC from the other office and put them together.

In my case, my field office is slower than CSC so by the time they get to the N400 the ROC shall be approved.

Thoughts?

I called USCIS yesterday. A tier 2 officer told me my case was transferred to National Service Center on June 27th. Different from what the other tier 2 officer who I talked to in mid July saying my case was at VSC as of July. Fun! I really hope this time I got the accurate info.

I remember you are in SJ office, right? We are in the same boat actually. I filed N400 a month after you while my ROC is still pending. Maybe when you get your N400 interview, I can have some hope. Did you get any chance to make infopass to USCIS to talk to an IO?
