BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh has vetoed the $15-an-hour minimum wage bill approved by the City Council.

The council voted 11 to 3 on Monday to approve the bill, which would raise the minimum wage in the city gradually to reach $15 an hour by 2022.

But Pugh vetoed the legislation on Friday, saying employers would leave the city rather than pay a higher minimum wage.

Twelve of the council’s 15 members would have to vote to override the veto.

She also broke one of her biggest campaign promises in the process. I don't think I could salute someone whose accomplishments are attained through deceit. There is no justification for unethical behavior. It sad that we have come to accept this behavior as normal for politicians.

When you can make $15 an hour flipping burgers I wonder what incentive people will have to take a job learning a skilled trade (or go to school to learn) starting out at $15 an hour (I started at $10 an hour as a machinist before I had any experience). Working in a fast food restaurant is not meant to be a career (unless perhaps you are in management). Those jobs are meant mostly for high school and college students to earn a little extra money. They are certainly not meant to be a means to support a family. If you want to make more money quit whining about minimum wage and go get a job that has more value to society.

Hasn't this been the norm for quite some time for politicians from all sides?  This is one of the reason I don't really pay attention to those keeping score on promises that politicians make.

Beyond that, I do have to applaud her for actually seeing the light at how damaging this type of action can be to the economy of a city or region.  She may have to pay the consequences in the form of a recall, or at the next election, but it was the right thing to do.

Judging by the ever increasing number of fast food places and waistlines it seems that they are quite important in today's America.

You know though, I never understood why in the US out of all places, where fast food plays such a big role, where you have deliveries and take out and take away and drive thrus for almost everything, they don't deliver burgers. Even in Israel they do. Although it's usually not the fast food chains like mcdonalds there that do, it's actually the better quality ones. I remember when my wife and I lived there every once in a while if we didn't feel like leaving to go sit in a restaurant we would just order what would be called there an entrecote burger from a couple of really good places, so convenient. Not that Americans need this service lol

Convenience. Of the Americans that are actually working, we live rather fast-paced strenuous lives and by the time we get home sometimes would rather just get food than bother cooking. Even low wage unskilled workers feel that heat because of FTA's siphoning middle class unskilled labor out of the country, jobs like this have to fill that void.

The price of fast food has also been lower, but as it rises to pay for the overhead throughout the country of this $15/hour stupidity, it will effectively price those low wage earners out. Liberals always say they're doing things for the premise of the downtrodden or minorities but wind up hurting them the most.

That's my point I'm not sure why the US out of all places doesn't do burger deliveries.

There are countless services that cater to this (even taxi services evidently do), and increasingly fast food services do offer delivery, although I'm in doubt it's going to happen for chains like McDonalds.

Oh I'm sure it varies state by state. I was talking by and large, it's not as common as I've seen elsewhere. We know of no service in our area here nor back in wifey's area in sconnnnsin.

I believe I heard somewhere that McD's is considering delivery services (it does have a small trial program in Florida). Burger King and Panera also do delivery. A lot of chain restaurants are also doing online-ordering to-go menus, and Olive Garden has started a delivery service.

Here's the thing - I don't mind paying more for food if it's good quality. Paying for overpriced poor quality food is never good. I actually feel quite bad that food service staff of any type aren't paid more and they seem very miserable. I know the average person doesn't really care how workers are treated when they go to a drive-thru... they just want to get in and out (heck they don't even seem to care that whatever it is they are eating is disgusting byproducts barely passable for nourishment).

The state of MD does intend to raise the wage to $10.10 by next year. It is still possible her veto could be over-written. https://www.baltimorebrew.com/2017/03/24/pugh-to-veto-15-minimum-wage-bill-she-said-as-a-candidate-shed-sign/

I do know that many are doing the thing where you can order and pay with an app. That will help with lines, surely, and help a company's overhead.

But delivery.. it could justify paying people less than min wage if they get tips, but then there's legislation dealing with that part too. I can't see how it would be worth it, and that's knowing McDonalds and co budgets specifically for the insane turnover. I've never worked logistics for this industry though so I dunno, I'm sure someone smarter than me can make it work.

I agree, which is why I said it's sad that it has become normal to tolerate this. A side effect of abject partinsanism is lack of accountability. I'm not pretending to know what the minimum wage should be either, but it's weird to me to think that I was making more than the current minimum wage stocking store shelves when I was in high school. That was almost 30 years ago.
