The presence of extremists on one side does not necessarily mean that there are extremists on both. The curve does not have to be symmetrical on both sides. You can't apply laws of physics to human behavior.

 

I'm not saying whether or not there are extremists on the left, just saying there doesn't HAVE to be just because there are some on the right. The curve could look something like below (with "the left" beind from 0-1 and "the right" being from 1-7 and the right extremists being the ~5-7 range). Or it could be even more wonky. It is human behavior so it could be as crazy as it wants to be.

There doesn't have to be, but the fact is there is extremists on both sides.  The main difference is how the moderates on each side treat or acknowledge the extremists on their respective sides.

I haven't really heard "alt left" before. The term "alt right" is less than 7 years old and I personally find it still fits within neologism and not an established idea.

 

There is neo-progressivism and its certainly fostered within the UC Berkley campus over the last 50 years or so, culminating in a disregard for things like freedom of speech or even freedom to walk across the campus.
