I'm from No Dak, live in Mandan. It was a looooooong summer. I believe the tribe never meant for things to end like this; but I certainly am not surprised by the mountains of C.r.A.p left behind because the protest was hijacked a long time ago by outsiders with their own agendas and motives. People who actually didn't care about the tribe or their situation but treated it like a hippie camp. They came in droves, put on face paint, shouted cute little rhymes about how oil is the devil and water is life, lived off the good graces of people who donated food and stuff, headed into town with signs that said "pilgrims should go back" and random stuff like that. Lol what? They got sucked into th feeling of unity and just went along with it. Suddenly it had nothing to do with the pipelines but now it was how the white people are thieves etc. The message was lost and those ND residents who once sympathized were turned off to what the protest became.

Then there was the small percentage of violent instigators. Guy who goes to my church who is a 3rd generation rancher has lost head of cattle and bales of hay. He's been ranching all his life and has never had that happen. We're talking about full-grown adult cows that fend for themselves. Sure they will loose calves to sickness or coyotes and maybe 1 or 2 adults wander off. Not 5.

Then there are his neighbors (several miles away) whose kids had to go live with grandparents when things got really bad. People with masks and bandana-covered faces would come in view of the house shouting and waving stuff around. Not guns I don't think but those kids were terrified.

A coworker of mine's husband is a cop. highway patrol I think. Yeah. He's had bottles and rocks thrown at him and has put in so much overtime.

Then the instigators led protests in Bis/Mandan against businesses that had nothing to do with the protest. Social media was their means to bully and attack them. They went after Sweet Treats for crying out lout, a bakery. Nothing to do with the pipeline. Ummmm what? People around here got real tired of that bologna.

The true intentions of the peaceful protest were drown out a long time ago by those who hijacked it, twisted and shaped it for themselves. Not only did they leave literal garbage as a legacy but the real damage is the relationship between the tribe and the No Dak residents. Trust on both sides has been very much damaged. Who is gonna clean that up? The protestors? Some have moved on to other more exiting ones while the rest just went home and went on with their lives.

P.S. Yes some protestors were paid to be there though they will all say "no there weren't" (then come after you on Facebook). I was in panera bread with my husband. Couple of people were 2 or 3 tables away from but it was still enough to hear part of the conversation. Absolutely appalling and I was speechless.

Well that's it. Take it or leave it but just wanted to put in my 2 cents in since NoDak is near and dear to my heart.

there were also instigators that were connected to/employees of the pipeline co. i'm pretty sure this is much bigger than the tribe and no dak residents. willing to wager the mess from the protesters will be minuscule in comparison to the mess dapl will create.

So the implications are that I cannot read, or is a simple case of progressive deflection?

calm down. start with your assertion that i said the first story was 'wrong' - which i didn't. i said allen west has an agenda (he does) and that agenda includes shaming protesters. it is always about silencing dissent with the right, always.

Hello everyone,

Don't care about those that go to Standing Rock to protest cause it is cool and I wouldn't by surprised if what the 1st link says is actually true.

However,  I totally support the Sioux protest and their refusal to allow the pipeline go through their land. This whole story is just saddening and disgusting.

They report on the supporters rather than the issue to avoid admitting that nobody wants the pipeline.

Maybe that tribe doesn't want it, but lots of other communities in the area have pipelines already in them.  We have a pipeline that runs through our town and across our water and that same body of water they are protesting for has other oil pipelines that cross it.

None of us were given the option to say no, but most don't care.

Why?  It isn't a big deal, it is just part of living in this part of the country.  I'm more worried about the fact that we get sprayed with pesticide every night during mosquito season.  I can't even have a backyard garden...

Then again, I've got to spray myself down with deet every time I go for a walk, so I'm sure that isn't healthy either.

I disagree and only wish that the attention and effort paid and put forth towards DAPL was actually given to the issues that the reservations in the upper midwest deal with on a daily basis - violence against women, epidemic poverty, sexual abuse, and drug abuse.  Those are literally killing them now, but hipsters don't seem to care about that.

cause we could not have a pipeline in this county without killing the environment. I bet you give them a royalty on every gallon that goes thru it or build them a casino they are all in

I agree with your point about the ignored problems of the native american communities, especially when most of the crimes and community issues are related to alcohol abuse. The other day I heard about this "ghost city" in Dakota that sells alcohol to the tribes and basically ruins their lives to make a huge profit... I didn't see any Occupy brat protesting there.

i haven't seen any calls from tribe leaders requesting protesters assistance in these areas, so maybe we should trust native leadership to determine what they would like to protest as concerns their people/land???

It is a free country, you don't need an official call to join a protest or to show support to a cause if you think that it is fair (and you do it in a respectful manner towards the people directly affected), but I somewhat agree and I don't like when white protesters take the spotlight on this.

My comment was more about how this was picked by some white americans to just make noise because it is on the media, even though if they really want to help these communities there are bigges issues that are actually killing them every day.
