Is wearing a suit to the interview really a bad thing?

Hello everyone,

I'm wondering about the proper clothes for the interview. I know this has been discussed here before, but I'm wondering about some more recent experiences. My husband only owns two sets of clothes: a black suit (which he wears with a black tie and a white shirt) and his more casual look of all black with a long sleeve polo shirt and black pants. The suit is his uniform and he just likes wearing it, despite being constantly overdressed compared to most other people. He pretty much wears a suit everyday, especially in the winter when it's cold.

So, I've seen and read some say that wearing a suit to the interview is too much, it's overkill, it looks like you're trying too hard. Is that really the case? Should my husband go out and buy something else just for the interview? I don't even know what he would buy....he's been wearing a suit everyday since he was a kid. (I know, it's a little eccentric but that's just his thing!)...I just don't want him to make a bad impression. Thoughts?

he should dress as he is comfortable. if he is good being like Barney Stinson thenso be it

Nice dress casual is generally the 'recommended'. Sometimes 'over dressing' has caused the CO to ask/scrutinize more as it can be seen as "overly confident"; but like above, if that's his normal wear then fine, but don't over do it.

Oh, missed it too, sorry, since youre going DCF it might not be a big issue though...

The point of the interview is to be yourself and take it seriously. If he wears a suit every day then that is him being himself. A suit is also serious enough; it's not pajamas and therefore appropriate for an interview. Don't worry any more about it.

Well I would go for semi- casual BUT during the interview (my mom's idea) is to dress appropriately to show them that I have some money or look sophisticated (she works in HR)

=Pick white, light blue, light gray polo shirt (light colors for cleanliness)--- no blazer overkill (can wear tie if you have a manager position, if not just skip it)

=Find light brown/ black slacks-- don't forget the belt

=wear leather shoes (if using rubber try the casual one, not the sports or flashy basketball one)

***If you have tattoos on you arms wear long sleeves

-----Usually at work I just wear a collared shirt and khaki pants so I need to buy those

But I'm a student visa though? I remembered the family in front of also wore long sleeves for the husband. The wife wore some dress (the one that moms wear to go to church, "conservative") and the baby wore normal baby clothes?

So the plan was this but I was so nervous (sometimes it just depends on luck i guess o.O )

My husband wore a suit to his interview and had no issues, I agree with dressing for the occasion and a suit shows that you respect that importance of the embassy and what you are doing there that day. If he does feel overdressed just leave the jacket in the car then hes not wearing a suit but black slacks and a nice white shirt and tie.

My husband arrived well dressed. I don't think it had an impact, though he did look handsome.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm probably overthinking it but I just wanted to get some input. I guess it will help that when they look at our photos, they'll also see that he's pretty much always wearing a suit.
