Only the Western media is complaining about it, while netizens in the various Asia forums are actually cheering that the new president has the balls to kick out the white man.

Perhaps it is time to rethink foreign policies.

OLONGAPO, PHILIPPINES In a bar along the Philippines Subic Bay owned by an American military veteran, the main topic of conversation is not the upcoming U.S. election despite the Donald Trump coffee mugs, photographs and caps on display.

The talk is of Philippines President Rodrigo Dutertes tensions with Washington and his courting of China, which is worrying the bars mostly American clients who have settled in the vicinity of the huge Subic Bay base, a former U.S. Navy installation.

The biggest fear is that one day hes going to wake up and say everybody from the U.S., get out of town and wed have to leave our loved ones behind, said Jack Walker, a retired marine sergeant who has lived in Olongapo, the town around the base, for five years.

For more than a century the Philippines and the United States have had a shared history of colonialism, wars, rebellion, aid and deep economic ties. That could change as Dutertes three-month-old administration re-examines the relationship.

In a series of conflicting statements, Duterte has insulted U.S. President Barack Obama and the U.S. ambassador in Manila for questioning his war on drugs, which has led to the deaths of more than 2,000 suspected users and pushers. He told Obama to go to hell and alluded to severing ties with Washington.

Then, after weeks of anti-American rhetoric, Duterte said the Philippines would maintain its existing defense treaties and its military alliances.

The comments have left Americans and U.S. businesses in the Philippines jittery about their future, said Ebb Hinchliffe, executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce.

Every time he opens his mouth and says something negative about America, that hurts me personally and from a business standpoint, its not helping, he said.

I have to say that my asawa and I have spoken about this at length. If you will remember we have been rather staunch Duterte supporters from the very beginning, but even my asawa is getting tired of his blunders and how he is telling world leaders to #### off. I told my wife that she better watch out or she will have to start learning Mandarin..... She wasn't happy that I said that but admitted it alarmed her.

I would weigh in, but I would just get a lecture on how I never married a Filipino wonan so I coukd not possibly understand how great a president Dirty Harry is.

I would assert that someone that has been immersed in another culture, might have more insight into that culture than someone that has never had contact with it. Certainly does not mean that every one does not have a right to an opinion or that the person with culture immersion can't be wrong.

When I was thinking of visiting the PI, I sought advice from people that grew up there or had visited several times. I did not seek advice from people that could not find it on a map. Seems logical, Right?

So what is wrong with PI cozying up to China?

Isn't it better that China starts helping to financing aids to other countries?

Considering China's actions in the South China Sea, I would think that the Philippines would want nothing to do with China.

But I think Duterte's hatred of the US is greater than his love of the Philippines.

Let me start by saying wife is from the Philippines and I have been there a few times. Not that this takes away from arguments of people who haven't. As far as the drug policy of the current president goes I will say I understand where he is coming from but strongly disagree with his methods. He was the mayor of a city that had a huge problem with violence from drug gangs. I understand his desire to do something about it but I cannot under any circumstances condone summary executions without a trial. My personal view on drugs is you decriminalize them and remove the black market and violence associated with it but that is a debate for another time. I do know from talking to people I know in the Philippines that he was elected because people were fed up with the violence and corrupt politicians which I can't blame them for.

As far as China goes anyone who has been to the Philippines knows basically everything there is owned by Chinese businesses anyways. When you have a country with one of the biggest military forces in the world knocking on your door and claiming some of your islands as their own your kind of in a tough situation. I'm not saying the response from the Philippines president is right. I am simply putting it into context.

I know the next thing I am going to say will upset some people but it is what it is. The Philippines is an independent nation and not a colony. As such they have every right to tell another nation (including the US) to stay out of their internal matters. These are just my opinions. Feel free to agree or disagree.
