hello everyone, so after arriving yesterday to beautiful New York, may i please know if i can apply for my social security card right away and what the procedure is? thanks

If you want your maiden name on it, then you can apply after two weeks or a few days after you've settled in--if you want it on your husband's name then you can apply after the marriage but expect a little waiting period for the card to arrive. Mine is on my married name already but it took them 3 weeks to send it out. I am from NY too.

You don't have to wait two weeks to apply. After a day or so, go online and print out your I94, then take this with your passport to the SSA and apply in your maiden name. You can try and change the name with your marriage certificate after marriage, but that is hit or miss at the various SSA offices. Usually it is better to wait for the EAD or GC in your married name to make the name change.

Or just keeping your name and saving yourself all that trouble...

In any case, get your I-94 printed, make sure the entered name matches your passport/visa exactly (if not you need to get it fixed) and head to the nearest SSA office with passport + visa + I-94.

They won't. The OP's AOS is from K1 visa - it's different and things don't work in the same way as they do for IR-1/CR-1 visa holders to get their SS#.
