Most states who's economies are heavily tied to oil have it rough right now. For states like Venezuela, that is there economy. It doesn't really matter where you are on the political spectrum when the only commodity you have left is dirt.

You're not "doomed" to have nothing but oil to start with it is a choice. It was their choice to count on oil alot more than anyone sensible enough to understand where things are going would have, and it was their choice to not encourage any innovations or technology or any other progress or advanced developments, it was also their choice to put in place policies that bankrupted the place. IMO blaming it all on oil is very short sighted.

No you didn't. I think if we listed the most important factors that contributed to the economic crisis in Venezuela, we would probably come up with similar lists, maybe in a slightly different order. Unfortunately I let my self get sidetracked by LIB again. For that I'll blame myself.

Hey it's all good. All I was trying to say is that I don't think putting it all on the price of oil removes the tremendous responsibility the current regime there has, which I believe we are in agreement on.

This ain't about Venezuela but if we're already speaking of such regimes, one of my crazy socialist/communist friends on FB posted this to their wall the other day, mind you it received 49 likes. Quoted is what was said in the post too:

I tend to follow the issues with Venezuela closely. In my opinion it is a combination of authoritarian leadership with a whole lot of socialism backed mostly by oil. The big problem they have is once the authoritarian regime came to power via Chavez and followed by Maduro, is that they simply won't admit their mistakes, continue to make promises they cannot afford, and do everything they can to stay in power including silencing their critics. I feel for the people down there, and hopefully they can change the regime as peacefully as possible. Time will tell.

The transformation caught the nations attention last Friday when the presidents decision to walk through this once pro-government neighborhood ended in him being surrounded by angry residents banging pots and shouting anti-government slogans.

Mr. Maduro fled to safety, but the incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, highlighting the presidents weakening authority at a time of deepening economic turmoil and as a resurgent opposition pushes for a recall referendum to end 17 years of socialist rule.
