no, this is a means tested benefit and as a permanent resident he cannot apply for any means tested benefits.i

if they have very low incomes, they should go to the local medicaid agency to see if in their states can be covered for any kind of medicaid emergency plan. i m not talking about any retroactivity. and this information is available in most of the madicaids portal. Can be covered even with a very low monthly payment from 0 as low as 20$. for example here in ny calling HealthNYC you can find any solution to a future emergency being covered.

Hi. I have applied for AOS and have recently been billed by hospital for an amount of more than $4000 because I went through some treatment. I am looking to apply for Medi-Cal to pay off this bill because I cannot because I dont have work permit yet and my wife is currently looking for work. My brother in law signed I-864 for me and my question is if I apply for Medi-Cal will my brother in law be held responsible for the costs Medi-Cal pays? What other options do I have without having my sponsor be in trouble. I am an educated and experience person and if I had work permit I would pay this myself but I am stuck. What should I do?

Have you contacted the hospital to potentially work out a payment plan?

Is Medi-Cal permitted for immigrants? I am not sure if you are supposed to use it, someone with more experience will offer advice.

Good luck

Med-Cal will not pay off this bill. Medical insurance will not cover charges that were incurred before you were covered by their plan. As stated above you need to call the hospital's billing department and work out a payment plan.

Applying for Medi-Cal is a bad idea. You are still a foreign person. While Your AOS can be denied if you are deemed a likely public charge.

Work with the hospital to pay your bill. Borrow the money from family and friends, then pay it back after you get your EAD and start working.

Your BIL is not on the hook until your green card is approved.

Wrong.

He does qualify for Emergency Medi-Cal which would pay for his recent medical visit. Coverage would be retroactive and bills from the last 3 months before filing are covered.

This is how I know; B2 visitor to US incurred $200,000 in hospital bills after suffering a heart attack. He couldn't pay and neither could his USC daughter. The hospital help him get Emergency Medi-Cal to pay his medical bill. Emergency Medi-Cal was approved a few weeks after he left the US. He has been refused on 2 subsequent B2 visa applications due to the hospital visit.
