(CBS) ARLINGTON, Texas - A woman was held captive inside an Arlington house for nine years after she was tricked and forced into modern day slavery.

CBS DFW reports this woman, who requested to be called Cindy, said she thought she was coming to Texas from Nigeria to work as a nanny for Emmanuel and Ngozi Nnaji. Instead, she was enslaved in their home for nine years.

The couple reportedly forced her to take care of her three children, and do all the chores 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"I had no choice," she said of her enslavement in the home. The couple never gave her a break, day off, or any time for herself.

Cindy said she wasn't even allowed to leave the house. The only time she ventured outside was at 4 a.m. to water the yard. She says Ngozi, "didn't want anyone to know me."

Before arriving in Texas in 1997, Cindy didn't speak English. She is a widow and made the painful decision to leave her six young children behind so she could earn money to send them.

She soon realized she was in trouble. She didn't know anyone except the Nnaji's.

The family never paid her as they promised and they took her passport and told her to forget about going home.

When asked why she didn't try to leave the house and escape, Cindy said, "I didn't leave the house because I was scared," she said. "I didn't know where to go."

Her situation grew even worse when Emmanuel Nnaji sexually assaulted her. "He raped me in the house," she said. "Ngozi was not there." Cindy says the sexual abuse continued but no one knew.

After eight years of being held against her will, Cindy finally found the courage to tell someone back home what had happened. In 2005, Cindy said, "I went to hide in the closet, talked to my niece and told her everything Emmanuel did to me. She said don't worry, we'll find someone who will help."

Cindy's niece knew a priest from Texas who was visiting Nigeria and she gave Cindy his cell phone number. In 2006, when no one else was around, Cindy called the priest to plot her escape.

In the next few days, the priest drove to the Nnaji's house. She walked out of the house with just a trash bag filled with a few of her belongings.

Cindy has been free ever since.

The FBI and Justice Department investigated this case, and two years ago this month, a federal jury convicted the Nnajis.

Emmanuel is serving a 20-year sentence. His wife, Ngozi, is serving a nine year sentence. Afterwards, she will be deported to Nigeria.

The couple must pay Cindy more than $300,000 in restitution. The Justice Department says between January 2008 and June 2010, agents investigated more than 2,515 human trafficking cases.

Most involved sex trafficking, but there were about 350 forced labor cases. One of which was the Nnaji's case.

I guess they didn't assimilate very well. Maybe we should add a few more exam questions to the naturalization test concerning domestic slavery, honor killings, FGM, multiple wives, and sex slaves to give these people a heads up on how the modern civilization views these beliefs and traditions and the possible legal ramifications!

A White Frat Boy Did It Before So That Makes It OKTM

Did someone say that it was ok? Or was someone pointing at one incident out of thousands (per the OP) because it is just that much worse unless Americans are doing it? I'm going with the latter.

350 cases (per the OP) isn't "thousands" except in the mind of someone who saw that a black person enslaved someone and wants to water the incident down.

As the old saying goes "dilution is the solution to pollution" right?

Thousands of trafficked persons cases. So yes, this case is one of thousands, I guess she's lucky because at least the sex was just with her forced laborer? Is this case 350 times worse than the 350 cases classified as forced labor?

Diluting your highly prejudiced opinion trying to be clever right?

Lucky? That stuff happens here all the time. Importing it to the US is a rectifiable mistake.

That might solve the smaller problem, but what is your solution for the much larger group of Americans who are involved in this sort of thing?

huh? i hear about black on black crime all the time! let's hear about some white on white crime, now that really doesn't get the attention it should. why are white people killing each other?!

Most of the conversation surrounding crime involves black people, who selfishly take all of the credit for being criminals. Blacks are notorious for being called thugs and gangsters, but the real MVPs (Most Violent People) are whites. Everyday in cities across the country, people die at the hands of white people. What's more, they're killing their own kind. According to the US Department of Justice statistics, 84 percent of white people killed every year are killed by other whites. In 2011, there were more cases of whites killing whites than there were of blacks killing blacks. Between 1980 to 2008, a majority (53.3 percent) of gang-related murders were committed by white people, with a majority of the homicide victims being white as well.

In America, whites commit the majority of crimes. What's even more troubling is that they are also responsible for a vast majority of violent crimes. In 2013, whites led all other groups in aggravated assault, larceny-theft, arson, weapons-carrying, and vandalism. When it comes to sexual assault, whites take the forcible rape cake. They are also more likely to kill children, the elderly, family members, their significant others, and even themselves! They commit more sex-related crimes, gang related crimes, and are more likely to kill at their places of employment. In 2013, an estimated 10,076 people died in the U.S. due to drunk driving crashes. Driving while drunk is almost exclusively a white crime because everyone knows black people prefer to drink on their porches or inside their homes.

So why is white on white crime so prevalent, one may ask? Is it the music they listen to? Is it the white divorce rate, resulting in more white children coming from broken homes? Perhaps it's the TV shows they watch or the violent sports they play. More than likely, it is a combination of all of those things, with the exact root cause unclear. What is clear, though, is that not enough people are talking about the crime plaguing the white community. We need to spread the word, holding protests and demonstrations that call attention to this growing matter. Because, after all---white lives matter, too.
