Hi fellow VJers...

I just called JRS Express (Courier Service here in the Philippines) and asked them how much it is to send my original passport in US. I am looking for a cheaper courier than FedEX. The guy told me that US customs banned sending Passports in America. They said they received the memo last November. Is this true?? If its true how can U send it to my husband. He needs it to file for his income tax next month...

Please help...

That is a bit confusing... They don't need your passport when filing his tax return.

Go to the US embassy, and get them to authenticate a copy of your passport. That's what we did with my wife's passport. It was $50. The IRS should accept an embassy authenticated copy, instead of the original.

Without a SSN, she will need to file a W-7, to get an ITIN, so they can file joint taxes. That requires sending the original passport, or a US embassy (in the country that issued the passport) authenticated copy.

I am sorry..... What I meant with "They don't need her passport" was they don't need her Original Passport to send from Philippines to US

What she needs to do is: Photocopy her passport, go to the US Embassy in Manila and they can authenticate her Passport and/or documents to send to the States. US Embassy here even do that. They can coordinate with the IRS in the States. The only time she gives her passport is when she is Visa approved right after the interview and that happens at the US Embassy.

My husband said he needs it to claim me as his wife for his income tax. And yes I dont have SSN yet I'm still here in the Philippines. It is ok for me to send him my original passport because we are just about to file our I-130 petition next month so its ok if I don't have my passport with me at this time. He will send it back right away after he use it anyway.

Is it true that it is banned in the US to send orig passport from other country?

I actually sent my passport to the US to get an ITIN, it was fine except it was returned to me in a cheap envelope using regular (non registered) mail.

They also made a few bad staple holes in my passport.

Other than that it was fine.

Two more options for your husband: 1) file the tax return as married filing separately if the benefits of using your deductions and claiming your income make it a better choice, or 2) file for an extension so he does not have to file the tax return until October--he does have to pay any taxes owed by April 15th or he will have to pay interest and a penalty. That way either you can get to the Embassy and get a copy of your PI passport, or maybe, just maybe you will already be in the US and he can file the tax return with your SSN before October. Either way, I would NOT send your passport to the US. What hoops would you have to jump thru to get a new one should it be lost in the mail. Also, this is one time where saving a few dollars is not worth the risk. When I renewed my passport I spent the money to send it via registered mail.

Good luck,

Dave

ITIN Generation, after ITIN Chasing, done whilst submitting paperwork for ITIN Obtaining.

No.

However, the shipping company you spoke with seems retarded.

Use a less retarded one, I suggest FEDEX.

US Embassy authenticated copy rule/allowance doesn't exist anymore, changed up for 2012 ITIN chasing.

I was lucky, we got in a year prior with a US Embassy authenticated copy done in Chengdu.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

From the August, 2013 Instructions for form W-7.

6a.

You can submit copies of original documents if you do any of the following.

Have the copies certified by the issuing agency.

Have the officers at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas provide certification and authentication services. Contact the Consular Section, American Citizens Services of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in advance to determine the hours of operation for these services.

OMG. I will stand down, then, as the prior version used not say that and many people got 'bounced' with rejection on the ITIN when attempting to use that.

Now, the Prior Prior version, the one we used, had the wording in there, and that's what we used. I was led to believe that it wasn't possible anymore.

Good Catch, Natalie or Bruce - 1000 points to ya !
