I got a U.S. citizen by naturalization on March 15 (I married to my us citizen husband) and i also have a 5 years old son with me that i brought him from my country he got a greencard, He also become a us citizen based on Citizenship act of 2000. today we went to the local post office for apply U.S passport, and for me everything is done but for my son the woman there said 'no way' he's not a u.s citizen! she said he wasnt born here he doesnt have u.s. birth certificate or she will accept it if he has a certificate N600 and she asked me when i got naturalized why didnt my son get one too if i'm saying he's a u.s citizen. Oh my god this made me real real mad i also printed out this information on the website http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1312.html#

"Must the Child Get a Certificate of Citizenship?

You do not have to apply for a certificate of citizenship for your child. If you want to apply for a certificate, please go to How to Get a Certificate of Citizenship for your Child for instructions"

and the subject about getting passport

How Does the Child Get a Passport Under the Child Citizenship Act?

You will need the following when the child applies for a passport:

Proof of the child's relationship to the American citizen parent. For the biological child of the American citizen this will be a certified copy of the foreign birth certificate (and translation if not in English). For an adopted child, it is a certified copy of the final adoption decree (and translation if not in English);

The child's foreign passport showing the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security (USCIS) I-551 stamp in the passport, or the child's permanent resident card (green card);

Proof of identity of the American citizen parent(s)

Passport application, passport photographs and fees. Go to Passport Services for forms and full instructions.

I got everything they needed my son original birth certificate plus translate one and also his greencard and this woman refused to read the paper that i printed out from state.travel.gov website. I asked her if she could call and ask and she's not gonna call. and handed all my documents back, talking bad, not polite and so so rude....

What should i do??? I need help!!! I'm worried if i go to different post officer it's gonna be the same. I think getting his N600 is too much expensive for me. the passport it's cheaper. Or is there anyway i can report this to us department ?

Why did you show her his greencard? Maybe this is what confused her. I understand that this is a requirement, but just go by the list item by item and present it when asked for it.

I would go back there again (or another post office) and apply. In the meantime, ask to speak to a supervisor if she's rude.

I'd go back and ask this employee to have his/her supervisor talk to you. Or the manager of the office you went to.

Post Office employees (not all, but many) seem to be the 'epitome' of customer service and from time to time, 'go postal'

What was her reason why ur son is not eligible to apply for a US passport? I am fixing to get my 2 kids their US passport as well as soon as i get my x's death Certificate. I am thinking the same that my 2 kids will be issued a US passport as well having me the parent naturalized as well thru child citizenship act.

Ask to talk to a supervisor. Most people are morons; the post office is no different.

I would not expect them to be cognizant of the many nuances in immigration law. I'm sure if you wanted their opinion as to whether your children are US citizens then you would have asked them for it.

You may also want to contact the State Department and inform them of your difficulties in applying for a passport.

Go somewhere else. Forget that postal office. In fact, forget all postal offices. Go to another type of office.

Sure, it'll mean a bit of research and maybe even a longish drive, but - you gots a moron.

You need to be where the moron is not.

I've seen the way they handle passport applications at my local post office....that's why I went to the courthouse to apply. ..... There was one person ahead of me, who was 'done' in less than 5 minutes.

Mine also took 5 minutes. I had the impression that the lady there did nothing but passports, she was very knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly.... even congratulated me on being a new USC.

Yep.... courthouse is the way to go!!:thumbs:

We avoided the Post office here for just that reason. We still had a few issues with my kids passports. The women accepting our documents wouldn't take the kids GC either, she swore up and down that a photocopy was enough. We did try to tell her she was wrong, but it was like talking to a brick wall. We let her send it out and waited to be asked for the items she refused to submit. We were not in a hurry and we didn't feel like driving 2 hours to an actual Passport office.

We now have the kids passports.

you're lucky! at least you could tell her to send it out. Me and my husband tried to tell her that too but she denied. And she kept saying "your child not a u.s citizen" in front of my poor child. that's just so sad.

I remember that the oath ceremony day i was so happy and telling my son "you're a citizen too!" he got big smile and we are so pround of eachother.

this woman at the post office so so mean!!

As others have said, go to a county courthouse to get this done. I had been told by two different post offices that my birth certificate wasn't valid. Went to a county court house and had it done in under five minutes. Clerk there explained the birth certificate I had was valid per the requirements.

I also became an US Citizen when I was a minor. Luckily, I did somehow get my passport without needing my US Citizen Certificate. However, It was hard to prove that I was an US Citizen in many situations. For example, when I applied to financial aid to attend college the process got delayed. I have also heard that even if you do have a passport but never received the certificate (which takes the place of a birth certificate) than you might not get your passport renewed until you can show the certificate.

I finally got my certificate (N-600) this pass week! You should just apply for it. The process is really easy and your son won't have to take the citizenship exam or attend an oath ceremony. It's well worth it! Also, you should go to the social security office and bring his social security card and have them update their records.

Good luck!

PS- I believe my parents applied for my Passport at the passport office not through the USPS. That might work in case you need a passport urgently. However, I do advice getting the US Citizen certificate, the immigration official who gave me my US Citizen Certificate told me that my passport did not officially prove I was an US Citizen.

Sorry, one more post. Yes, the cost of the certificate is too much!!! I actually applied for a fee waiver and got it for free!! You should look into it. I just graduated and so I think that helped but if your income is less than the required you will probably qualify.
