A person's expression should be neutral ( not smiling) with both eyes open & mouth closed. When I had my photo taken at Costco, the lady there told me not to show my teeth.

You can show your teeth. Any advice to the contrary is based on rumor. Look at the example pics from the gov, some have teeth.

Well, I was told not to show my teeth by the lady in Costo. Even during my Biometrics I asked the lady if I can smile & show my teeth, she said NO. She even had to re-take my photo coz she can see a hint of my teeth. That is my experience with regards to the photos.

Well, they were wrong. Some people are overzealous.

USCIS has strict guidelines copied from the DOS for photos primarily due limits in facial recognition software. But the reason your actual photo may not be a big deal, is for your AOS, the USCIS will take their own photo of you for your greeen card. If for the conditional card, have to go to biometrics again for your ten year card. Were using your photos for the certificate of naturalization, but more recently, also taking their own photos of you for your certificate.

For a US passport, DOS is about the only one left that uses your supplied photos. For the USCIS, can always bring in correct photos at your interview. Shouldn't be an issue, just do what you are told to do.

From NVC website: http://travel.state....toreq_5334.html

Your photos or digital images must be:

  • In color
  • Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 mm and 35 mm) or 50% and 69% of the image's total height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. View the Photo Composition Template for more size requirement details.
  • Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
  • Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
  • Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
  • With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
  • Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis
    • Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is worn daily.
    • Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline, unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
    • Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.
    • If you normally wear glasses (without tinted lenses), a hearing device, or similar articles, they may be worn in your photo.
    • Dark glasses or glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable.
    • Glare on glasses is not acceptable in your photo. Glare can be avoided with a slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses or by turning off the camera flash.

Then the Lady needs to get a life and more work assignments because if you smile with your teeth then that is how you smile. It doesnt matter if your teeth are showing or not if you smile or straight face. All that matters is they have a clear view of your face and it is positioned correctly. The rest is just people that want to make you think they know more than they do. You will be fine OP...
