BRYAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A 12-year-old girl took matters into her own hands during a home invasion in southeast Oklahoma.

It happened on Wednesday when the girl was home alone. She told police a stranger rang the doorbell, then went around to the back door and kicked it in. She called her mom, Debra St. Clair, who told her to get the family gun, hide in a closet and call 911.

That was when St. Clair dropped what she doing and raced home.

"I drove home at a really fast pace to try to get to her, and when I got here the police were already here. And they had the suspect," she said.

The during that time, the intruder made his way through the house. St. Clair's daughter told deputies the man came into the room where she was hiding and began to open up the closet door. That was when the 12-year-old had to make a life-saving decision.

"And what we understand right now, he was turning the doorknob when she fired through the door," said the Bryan County Undersheriff Ken Golden.

The bullet hit the intruder, who deputies identified as 32-year-old Stacey Jones. He took off but did not get far before officers took him down.

"He was sitting down, the policemen had him apprehended at the end of the block. All I saw was some blood coming down his back. I'm not exactly sure where his injury was, but I saw some blood there," explained St. Clair.

Jones was taken to a Texas hospital by helicopter after the incident. An investigator on the case said Jones was released from the hospital Thursday and extradited to the Bryan County Jail.

The 12-year-old girl was not injured during the ordeal.

Charles! How insensitive can you be! Didn't you see the article yesterday saying to take guns out of the homes!

This girl should have been hurt by this man! Possibly kidnapped and beaten to death! How dare you tell an article about how she used a gun to protect herself! For shame!!!

Typical Liberal: Where did we fail this young man, what drove him to resort to such a desperate act, he no doubt was crying out for help and we were not listening.

This should be a "teachable moment" for us.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

That poor criminal. How dare that little girl shoot him. She should have run from the house and let him steal everything. What kind of society tolerates people defending themselves?

Not just robbed. Rape and/or murdered comes to mind also.

The only downside I see is she did not kill him.

The teachable moment is that at some point she was taught how to load and use this gun.. A future NRA member for sure.

No the little girl won't be traumatized by this event... Good to see you all caring so much and not trying to score political points with this story.

And no, sorry. Happy outcome? Yes. Definitive proof guns are safe? No.

The little girl will be traumatized by this, no doubt about it. i am a grown woman and if i had to shoot/kill someone who broke into my home, there is no doubt in my mind I'd be traumatized, however, I'd rather be traumatized by that than being traumatized for the rest of my life (if left alive) by being a victim of rape. this scenario always comes to them (the scumbag) your and/or your family's lifes.I'd do what it takes to protect the latter.

I applaud the little girl for doing what she had to do to protect herself.

The trama would be from having someone break into her safe home. For a long time it will be an issue "If I am left alone will I be safe." The fact that she shot through a door and never saw the results of that shot I would think not much so.I would think that the police would have opened the door and coaxed her out rather than she hunted down her would be attacker.

Well given he lived I don't think there will that much trauma. Should the guy shot have died instead, of course not...good outcome all the way round IMO.
