Hey all,

Was wondering if before the interview we get sworn in to tell the truth and nothing but the truth..I believe we are, but do we have to put our hand on the bible or is it just a normal verbal swearing in?

Just a normal swearing in. In any case in the US where you would have to do it over a bible (say you became a senator), you would choose which bible you wanted, btw, but that won't be happening for USCIS.

Out of interest, why does it matter? I'm not being rude just wondering. Is is a lack of religion thing? Are you planning on lying and swearing on the bible would make you feel bad? I'm just wondering 'cause it seems like an odd qn and maybe there's a scenario i'm not seeing.

Judging from the country and the avatar pic, I'm guessing that the beneficiary (and probably petitioner also) is a Muslim.

Yes I am a Muslim, so it does matter, you are correct JimVaPhuong.

Am I planning on lying?? Well, no of course not, why would you think that? Just because I don't want to put my hand on the bible? I never said I would not swear or take an oath.

I don't see an avatar pic and I don't judge religion on country hence my question.

Now that you've said Muslim though I'm curious, what happens in courts where they DO swear on a bible? Do they change it to the religious text of choice? I'm not joking, I'm seriously curious...

Yes, they can and will change the bible, as I said.

In fact, in some religions people don't want to take oaths, so they are permitted to "affirm."

In my picture with my husband I'm wearing a veil covering my hair; I don't know about courts, but where I come from we swear on whatever book we believe in whether it's the bible or the Qur'an.

Some people have no issue with lying. Not saying you DO that's why I asked. Some people think that not swearing on a bible doesn't make it as bad that they're lying. Again, I wasn't saying you WERE considering that, i just asked because it seemed an odd question. I didn't even think about different religion.. I did consider lack of religion so hand on the bible would be pointless... Ahh well. thanks for answering my question anyway :D

Yes, they can and will change the bible, as I said.

In fact, in some religions people don't want to take oaths, so they are permitted to "affirm."

I completely missed that. Sorry! I've been thinking about the "affirm" thing because I'm not religious and would prefer not to "swear to God" because it would be a complete lie to swear to a God I don't believe in.

We have the separation of church and state here, so most things don't involve any bible at all. I don't think it's like the old movies where they swear on a bible in court anymore. If anyone has been to court, please correct me if I am wrong.

I have seen photos of US Senators/Reps getting sworn in, and they do use a bible (of the type they wish). I am not sure if that is a requirement or a bit of theater to satisfy their religious constituents, though.

Some people don't want to take an "oath" - even though it says nothing about swearing to god, so they are permitted to "affirm." I am not sure if that works for court too, but I know that is the law for things like signing "under oath" that you agree to the terms of a document, or simply verify your signature, for instance.
