This may well be one of those incredibly simple questions, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer on it. So here it goes, is it possible for me as the U.S. petitioning citizen of my foreign fiance to fly across the ocean to attend his K1 visa interview? And are the chances of a successful interview vastly increased by my doing so?

I have ptsd and have an extremely hard time flying, but I will if it puts our case in a much better light to the interviewer. But I'd rather know before it happens so I can plan accordingly whether or not it's worth the mental hassle.

It depends on the embassy really. I don't know about Slovenia's policy on letting others into the interview. As Slovenia is not exactly a high fraud consulate I don't think that it would make that much of a difference if you were there or not.

That is correct it depends on the embassy. I know in Bogota it is important the that both parties show up for the interview but it's not a requirement. I have heard of fiances being told that the visa was not going to be issued and to return with the fiance in Bogota. I know some Embassy's you cannot go to the interview. You need to do some research.

Depends on the consulate. In Ukraine, YES. I stood with Alla at the window when we had our non-interview interview (no questions asked) I was there for HER not for any other reason. I do not think it makes a difference in MOST consulates. Ask around for advice from people that used the same consulate.

technically every petitioner is given the right to go to the interview with the beneficiary, however,in reality it is different.

you can email your embassy and ask them directly, and get an email from them stating that you can enter the embassy for the interview as well

Only if the Embassy will allow you to attend. Moscow does not, Kiev does.

Every Embassy is different, so you need to find out about your specific Embassy.

The U.S. Embassy Manila (USEM) generally allows the petitioner to attend the interview. In my opinion, when the petitioner attends the interview at the USEM, it can make a difference in the outcome of the visa approval, especially if the petitioner's income is flirting with the poverty line.

As others have said, it depends on the Consulate, and you will receive lots of responses saying it doesn't matter, but even if you can't go in to the interview, your fiance can take your passport in to the interview with him (that is what we plan for Guangzhou) It may or may not help, but it certainly can't hurt and if you don't go and there is a problem then you will wonder if it would have made a difference. If you can afford it and have the vacation time, make the trip.

It helped us at our interview, however I was not allowed to go in with my fiance. When my fiance told the CO that I was outside, the CO sent for me. It helped to show the reality of our relationship, and it helped that I could be there to understand the instructions the CO gave us.

But I think good preparation and plenty of evidence of your relationship (plus evidence of past visits) are probably just as good.

Jen and Babs

Psalm 20:5

1/01/2007 - First date

2/04/2010 - I-129F sent

2/08/2010 - NOA1

3/30/2010 - NOA2 Approved!!

4/07/2010 - NVC received

5/12/2010 - Packet picked up/interview date assigned

10/25/2010 - Finally back in Ghana to visit!

11/01/2010 - Interview--mostly positive, but consular officer requires cosponsor

11/24/2010 - 3rd appt.--Finally have all documents in. Result-Administrative Processing! Consulate says they will contact my fiance

05/18/2011 - Admin processing complete! Babs is asked to appear at the embassy on the 25th.

05/25/2011 - En route to the embassy, Babs is robbed on the roadside. His passport and other papers are all stolen. After filling out a police report, he arrives at the embassy a little late, and they allow him in to speak to the CO, even though he has no valid ID. Thank God! The CO gives him another appointment on June 15th, to bring a new passport and also an updated police certificate.

06/14/2011 - New passport (expedited) ready.

06/15/2011 - The CO finds a missing stamp on the new passport. Sends Babs back to the passport office and tells him to return in the afternoon. All is taken care of. VISA APPROVED!!!! PRAISE GOD!!!!

06/24/2011 - Visa pick up date--told to return on the 30th.

06/30/2011 - Babs returns but doesn't get the visa. Back in AP!

10/05/2011 - Embassy brings Babs back with updated medical. Approved!! CO sets pick-up for only 2 days away, so as not to delay him any longer.

10/07/2011 - VISA IN HAND!!

Moscow won't even let you into the waiting room, so your presence will truly make no difference. Again, check the embassy you will be going to for the rules there.

But even if you can't get to the waiting room, there is still the psychological support to your fiance. I don't know either of you, so these are all things you need to research and figure out if your presence would be of any value.

Since I can't even get into the waiting room for my fiance and she has been to Moscow many times, I determined it would be best to conserve my vacation days (and money) for her arrival here.

In Colombia at the US Embassy in Bogota you can enter and are welcomed. I was first in line and was greated by the CO when I was at the embassy window.

This is stated very well. Avoid relying totally on embassy websites to guide your decision; the VJ reviews from your country are more valuable. Also, remember that consular personnel rotate every few years, and policies and standards can change. One might not want to skip the trip only to learn that a new Section Chief has an unspoken policy that visas will be refused or put on 221g status unless the USC is present for the FIRST interview.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
