Yesterday my husband called me urgently at work to say he had just received a call to say his Dad had died. So now he needs to get home to the East coast to see to funeral arrangements. His mother is a chronic alcoholic and is constantly up to the eyeballs on prescription drugs and doesn't even know what day it is, so she's in no fit state to do anything.

So, I knew my husband's pay check hadn't yet arrived and called my bank to ask if we could get an overdraft for $1500 just to last until his check clears which would be either today or Monday just to enable me to book flights, hotel and rental car so he can go and take care of the funeral arrangements ets. I wanted to do this just so I wouldn't become overdrawn in the bank pending his check so I wouldn't be hit with huge fees. They refused - on the basis that I don't have a long enough credit history! I have banked with them for 20 months - we pay both our salaries into the account every two weeks, a monthly total of $8000 and I explained quite clearly, although tearfully why we needed this temporary overdraft. I told them that it would be paid in full as soon as his check cleared which at the longest would be Monday but NO - can't help you. SO of course I had to book everything because he just HAS to go - it's not optional, and now I have huge fees for being overdrawn!!!$#%@!*

The I asked my three bosses early this morning if I could work from home today as I have the capability to do just so I can be there to support my poor husband which is what I believe a marriage is about, but only one out of three responds that it's ok - so I had to come into the office. The other two didn't respond at all. The thing is that I am abiding by that but what really grates is that one of my bosses just emails us and tells us two days ago that she's working from home as her son has an orthodontic appointment - ok fair enough! The other big boss literally dropped everything on the spot when his wife called about three months ago to say her mother had died - and he was done for five days, even though the company was in crisis. And today he's bumming out of the office at 11:00am to go home to his wife and family. ....

Is it too much to ask for a little understanding and leeway from people at times like this? Sorry for the rant but I'm really upset just now - probably a little emotional and being a wee bit irrational but I had to rant and I know you guys have broad shoulders and won't take it personally.

Thanks for listening.

No. It's not too much to ask. Sorry.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
