    1) not sure which would be better for you honestly.  Once you become a non-resident you change the way your company pays taxes on you.
    2) regardless if you file jointly with your spouse you have to declare world wide income for that year.  Unlike Canada that only taxes you on residency, the USA doesn't.  So regardless you likely will have to file taxes for the whole year but probably can claim some sort of exemption since there is a tax treaty that prevents double taxation.
    3) see above.  the biggest issue will be your loss of health care benefits.  You'll need private insurance for the time period that you're in Canada still.
    4) nope

In June 2019 @KartineeKartoons started a group message for Canadian spousal applicant VJers who were stuck in the Montreal interview scheduling backlog. They invited members at the same stage in the IV process and the message group has remained active more than a year later, currently with 199 VJ members. Not all members are active in the conversation, and a few weeks ago someone suggested it was time to disband the message group.

I am inviting all the active members to hold our discussion here, publicly in the forum, moving forward. Having our collective experiences and knowledge siloed behind closed doors is a disservice to the the whole of the VJ community. Let's strengthen the community as a whole by making a shift.

Let's all help keep information accessible to all and transparent, and alleviate the anxiety other visa applicants experience navigating this convoluted process.

What it needs to be is a thread, but there have been many attempts to turn it into one and all have failed. At the very least I think we're coming up on the point where we need to start a fresh chat as we're well into 300+ pages and it's getting quite slow to post to. As for the FAQ, it would be much harder to maintain without a centralized source of information.

Eventually all of it will no longer be needed (looking forward to that day because it'll likely be because Montreal has finally sorted out their backlog), but while it is still serving people I don't see the harm.

It makes zero sense to protect Canada by refusing to allow canadians to immigrate the US. In fact by doing that they are increasing the number of Americans who can travel here based on exemptions.
There are other consulates doing interviews so its obviously not to protect the states. Just because people are emotional doesn't mean they aren't rational. There is no valid reason for montreal to be closed compared to some other consulates that are open.

The Canadian government is not allowing fiances into the country under the travel ban exemptions.

Last year I went to visit my partner in the US to get married. I had a return ticket for 10 days' stay. As I went through on Nexus, I did not need to disclose that I was getting married but had I been asked the purpose of my visit, I would've simply said that I was visiting my partner for 10 days and been sure to have evidence of my ties to Canada and intention to return. Don't offer more than you're asked.

Going to the US to get married is not illegal. Intended to get married and then stay to adjust status is considered fraud, so just be sure you've got proof of return and you'll be fine.

    Congrats!

In some places, CR-1 visas are not being processed still either, despite being called mission critical in the EO. I hope we all get to be with our spouses again soon, but it doesn't seem that "mission critical" actually means anything.

Tired is the perfect word for it. I'm just so tired.

I think these tweets are because some of the embassies that were in phase 2 last month are now eligible to enter phase 3 which is when routine visa services can resume. Based on my interpretation of the DOS guidelines, Montreal will need to enter phase 2 in order to resume mission critical visa services, and phase 3 in order to resume routine visa services. We're getting there, but there's still a long way to go.

I'm in the same boat as you. Montreal is notorious for their long delays and lack of communication. You can't reach them by phone, the website is never updated, and their social media account just posts fluff stories. Someone had said they did manage to talk to someone at Montreal (only because the consulate called them first) and they were told they're in Phase 1 of reopening, which means their staff are only processing emergency cases and staff has returned at only 40% of previous capacity. I want to be hopeful, but I'm tired (as we all are).

Call me pessimistic but I think their use of the word "may" means we'll be hearing absolutely nothing. It'll be a nice surprise if we do.

I'm also only getting the generic auto-reply.

What's confusing is that their website says:

"Embassies and consulates have canceled all routine immigrant and nonimmigrant visa appointments as of March 20, 2020, but will continue to provide emergency and mission-critical visa services as resources and local conditions allow. We will resume routine visa services as soon as possible but are unable to provide a specific date at this time."

So if CR1 visas are in the EO exemption as being "mission-critical", why aren't we being scheduled yet?

In the same boat. DQ May 22, 2020. Awaiting Montreal consulate (which already had at 6 month wait list for an appointment before Covid). I don't understand what "mission critical" is even supposed to mean at this point, since it seems our CR-1s/IR-1s aren't getting priority anyway.

Yes, I assume so. Although I just checked the website and it allowed me to reschedule my interview for July 9th, 5 days earlier than my original interview which is strange. I assume this will probably be cancelled also although I can hope it goes ahead!

Thanks for all of your comments- it is obvious you have a lot of experience with these issues. There is just one thing that I would like to bring to your attention and that is the fact that my spousal visa has almost taken 2 years and we are more than likely still a year away from getting our interview so yeah, in my case it is quite a bit longer than many others have had to wait and I still find it an unacceptable time frame. My efforts may be fruitless but we have to keep trying. Thank you for providing your experiences and sharing your knowledge.
