I did owe, but because I changed from HOH to single. This was before I was married, and while I was taking care of my mother. After I filed HOH, she ended up getting disability with significant back pay in excess of $50k for a couple of years, hence why I had to change one year from HOH to single. I owed money, but didn't pay. Instead, they just deducted what I owed from future refunds, with interest of course.
 
Its hard to tell if you will owe money or not. You need to do mock returns for married filing separate vs married filing joint, and choose whichever has the least tax burden. You MAY even end up getting money back, but only for the most recent three years.

To note:  I personally don’t see an issue with a husband and wife having separate accounts.  It’s 2019, and that idea is archaic, but immigration doesn’t appear to take that view.

I would try to push it back 3 months if I was in your shoes. Not having to go through the whole ROC mess would be worth the 3 months extra wait even if I could not work. But that is just my opinion.
Also you could file for the N400 after about 1 year (your residence status starts on the day they receive the application, not on the date they issue the card.
 

Update on my case.
 
I sent my RFE on April 5th and didn’t get any update on my case like they got my RFE response or not. I was worrying. So today I decided to check my status and it says New Card is mailed to me and it’s a tracking number with it. My email alerts were on but I didn’t get anything. So don’t stress or panic. If post office delivered to right address that means they got it. Thank you so much for everyone shared their experiences. 

Hey guys, i hope everyone is holding up as best as they can. Old site says new card is being produced but my uscis online account is yet to update/reflect the change. I sure hope i'm not excited for nothing.

I wanted to file for N400 but given that CSC had picked up speed (arguably) in last six months -- I felt it would be better to wait as my ROC applications reaches a 12 month window of processing.

I am on hold right now it is an estimate of 25 mins wait time these are the commands I used to get to a representative 1,2,4,6,# and I called  to 800-375-5283

Today we have notification (email & text) for N 400 testing and interview. No new info on the I 751. Both should be approved together. Just waiting on letter with interview date. Good luck to anyone still here waiting and following this ghost town thread 

The question is - do both of you maintain a primary residency at one location? If you do, you do not need to explain anything.  Temporarily living apart is not different from you going on an extended business trip somewhere else.
 
You should just submit documents related to your primary, principal residence where you have joint responsibilities together.  USCIS does not (and should not) be privy to every aspect of your life situation.  They are by law required to know if your marriage is bona fide and if it is, then there is no issue.
 
I would suggest you maintain everything in one address — bank account, credit card, etc.

@Cougarfalcon83 -- they are manipulating the numbers.  The unload a bunch of cases so their numbers are reduced overall.  It is such a scam.

Weird question though - have you ever contacted USCIS to inquire about your case? I wonder if constant bugging to USCIS may speed up your case? 
 
I contacted USCIS about my case for Biometrics and already approved. I have seen lots of time people inquiring and suddenly they get approval. Yes it could be just coincidence but multiple datapoints can't be ignored just as coincidences.

I want to share with you that I wrote to my US Representative and Senators today to request for an enhanced oversight over USCIS’s operations.  I took up the issue with I-751 and showed the data that the rising processing times appears unmatched by the number of applications (see attached picture for a small part of the letter).  The Democratic representatives are generally tougher on agency oversights (in a sense of making sure that USCIS serves the people paying them, not all the taxpayers, because it is a 95% user-fee-funded agency).  The taxpayers money goes to the enforcement branches (CBP and ICE) of the Department of Homeland Security.
 
I made the point that the agency needs to account for how they are spreading their resources (which are paid by us).  As far as we know for I-751, our money are being spent elsewhere within the agency.
 
I will share with you it and when I have any response from our elected representatives.

There was an October 2018 case (10/16/2018) assigned to Nebraska that was approved yesterday.  No N-400 has been filed. Hopefully they are picking up the pace across the board and this is good news for everyone, starting with petitioners who have pending cases since 2017 and early 2018!

I saw someone from June 2018 getting approved on the FB page

Someone on FB group was approved, he sent package on April 27th and received on April 28th as per NOA.
 
Time line:
Package sent: April 27, 2018
Date Delivered to California USCIS: April 29, 2018
Receipt Date: June 04, 2018
12 and 18Months Extension: forgot the date I received them.
Waive Notice Biometrics: Feb 22, 2019
Approval of I751 : March 12, 2019
total processing time: 11 months

Congratulations on the new job! I recently switch companies too and I only presented by "clean" SSN and Driver's License as for the I9 I think I just mark as LPR. I had all my extensions letters, I-551 stamp and expired green card with me in case my employer asked for them but the SSN and DL was enough.

Yes, that is correct if you are with the same employer and you have first produced your green card as a proof of work authorization, the employer may not ask for proof again as long as you continued to be employed, or that would be considered discrimination based on the country of origin.
 
If you do change your employer, or if you did not use your green card (instead use your EAD, for example), the new employer or the current employer (whom you showed the EAD to) may ask for proof of work authorization as a condition for continued employment.
