You should be able to stop by your local public library, or the DMV/testing center to pick up a free driver handbook. It will go over some basic rules and the signs. It also should have all the questions and answers that will be on the written test. Matt thumbed through it once or twice and then mailed it to his parents so they could make fun of it and know how to drive in Missouri once they make it over here.

Good idea! I’ll have lee pop by tomorrow and grab one for me. I’m so excited to drive over here it’s actually kind of sad haha

  2. Received my APPROVAL letter in the mail today!!!! It’s really real. Absolutely ecstatic :) but one point to note is that regardless of me changing my address through the USCIS website AND the officer correcting our address at the interview, it was sent to our old house. Thankfully it’s my in-laws home, but it’s pretty annoying as it’s 30 minutes away from us.

    Hi everyone! Quick question:

Our interview is schedule for the end of Aug (wooo!) and my husband had his overseas medical last year in July. I was under the impression that the medical is only good for one year, but according to the I-693 instructions "You are not required to have another medical examination as long as you file your Form I-485 within one year of an overseas medical examination."

Since his medical was in July 2018, and we filed AOS in November, according to this statement, he should be okay to NOT have another medical, correct?

I'd love just a little clarification/validation because this whole time I was thinking he'd need another medical since it's been over a year. Thank you!!!

I was worried about this also, had my medical in May and filed in Nov (so longer than you!) and I was fine. I took a copy of my DS2053 and vaccination history but she didn’t ask to see either at my interview. You will be ok :)

Don't worry too much if you do have to take your driving test, I worried about mine but never left the parking lot except to do a three point turn (which I did in more than three because my car was stupidly long), and I walked away with a driving license. The written test is multiple choice - worth reviewing some things because there are some differences between the way the UK does things and the US.

Maybe also see if you can find some videos of tests in your state too, I found that helped me know what to expect.

I also wouldn't worry. My husband's taken it twice now and passed with a 98% both times. He took it the first time because Missouri allowed him to get a licence with a K1 (and then three temporary driver permits valid for 60 days after his licence expired) and the second time he had to take it because he was able to get a licence with his EAD/AP card but his first licence had been expired for 6 months. I'm still making fun of him for not get 100% the second time around. You know how to drive and as long as you do it sensibly and just a bit more cautious than usual, you'll pass with flying colors.

Matt had me take the UK hazard perception test and the UK written test a few months ago. And I failed both. Miserably. I've had my licence since I was 17 and have only become a better driver since I passed with the bare minimum 70%. So yeah, all of you who have had driving courses like those of the UK and Germany (which are the only countries outside of the US that I know have pretty intense driving lessons), you'll be fine.

Yasss so good to hear that it’s easier than the UK. I will do a little research regardless to bring me up to speed but I’m glad to hear you both had pretty good experiences! Thanks both :)

After going to the dmv 6 times my husband finally got his US drivers license! The people at our dmv in NJ were terrible and never gave us all the information. He does not have his green card yet (interview August 22nd 🤗) but was able to get a limited time NJ drivers license once he was approved for his EAD/AP. My husband is also from the UK and was only required to take the written test not the driving test. It might be different depending on what state you live in though.

He filled out the paperwork as a license transfer and brought his 6 points of ID (passport, EAD/AP, a bill with our address, his debit card, SSN card). He also brought in his UK license.

    Luck!

Totally depends on the state but a GC plus other docs will grant you a full term license that will expire on the expiry date of the GC.

Ensure your SSN name matches the GC name though. That's usually a requirement.

Whether you have to take the road test will be up to your state.

Researching yous state DMV for non US citizen DLs will be helpful.

    Thank you both so much!

  6. Hey all, I have a question-

what happens when I receive my GC in terms of driving? I have my license that I got in the UK, so do I go straight to the DMV? Or should I take a couple of lessons to bring me back up to speed? Will I need another driving test? I’m not sure how all of it is going to work and I don’t want to sit at the DMV for hours and then get told they can’t help me or something 😂

I had my interview this morning.. did not receive a verbal approval HOWEVER i received a text message an hour ago saying that “New card is being produced”. I am OVER THE MOON right now!!! I can’t believe it! Thank you all for being my saving grace when this process has gotten confusing. I wish all of you a smooth and easy rest of the road. If you care to read my interview experience, I’ll be putting it on my timeline for you to read.

    goodluck all 🥰

    i've posted my review! :)

Yes, that's how it was. :P

We handed the officer copies of joint documents on health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, bank account, credit card, tax return and a shared membership.

Also two pages with 4 b/w pictures each.

    That was it.

Regarding address, whatever thing you've received with your name and address: letters, bank statements, brochures, etc.

Awesome, thank you so much! I’ll go rummaging to see what I have lol 😂

What matters the most is financial commingling. Also an updated proof of income -such as tax return for 2018- is important. Whatever shows you share the same address is useful too. It seems you have all that covered.

The rest of the documents are mostly just in case they misplaced/lost something, as they already have them.

From what I've read so far and our own experience, they will ask you to decide on what to give them -we were literally asked: "What do you have for me?"-. They'll let you know if they want it or not.

Yeah the 1040 we have is 2018, I believe I have 17 in the folder too!

not sure what else to bring that will show that we live at the same address other than what we have, do you have any recommendations?

And really? What did you give to them when they asked that?

  10. Hi all! We have my interview tomorrow morning at the Holtsville office on Long Island. I’m doing some last minute prep on my folder and wanted to see if anyone had any more recommendations on what we should bring,

so far this is what we have:

    •interview notice

    •vaccination history, X-ray disk & a copy of my DS3025

•my husbands 1040 tax return document

•a letter from my husbands employer stating length of employment and current pay

•all (or most) documents received from USCIS throughout the process

    •I-94 arrival departure record

•my birth certificate and a photocopy

•my husbands birth certificate and a photocopy

    •both of our passports

•my UK driving license and his US driving license

•SS cards for the both of us

•marriage certificate original and a certified copy

•joint assets together such as: our apartment lease, bank statements and our phone bill (we don’t have joint health insurance or car insurance etc yet)

•letter from USCIS with our change of address

•police certificate original and copy (although I’m pretty sure I don’t need to bring it)

•pictures from our relationship ranging from 2014 to now. I’ve labeled every picture with the date they were taken and who is in the photo. I’ve also organized them by date. I’m sure this also doesn’t matter much though

•wedding cards that we received from family and friends

is there anything else anyone recommends that we take?

    thank you!

Got our GC in the mail today! Now hubby can finally get an SSN and start living a normal life (though I think he is less excited that he doesn't have an excuse to not look for a job now. lol!) They kept the mystery till the very end with tracking number not being available but I am impressed it got here (GA) in 2 days from Missouri.

Wishing everyone the very best of luck and sending vibes for speedy processing!

    Aww yay! Congrats!

I just got updated on the USCIS app on Saturday that my green card interview has been scheduled. Nothing in the mail yet so no idea when the interview is. How long is it usually from app being updated to the date of the interview?

You get the letter about a week later and the interview is usually about a month - 5 weeks from the notification

Yeah the fact that they have 30 days to respond is crazy. Sad to hear that the inquiry hasn't led to anything for you yet, although not surprising. I just don't understand how we can still be left behind in the combo card processing. I mean, as more and more people around us get their green cards, that should open up more time to work on combo cards, since the green card holders' combo cards stop processing at that point. I don't have much hope for an interview, the Seattle office processing times are 13-22.5 months. At this point, it almost seems crazy to stay here any longer. If we get past 1 year without my hubby being able to work, we might just leave and try our luck in Belgium. I mean how long can we possibly do this? It's ridiculous.

It’s good to never get your hopes up, but at the same time always stay positive and optimistic. Trust me, I know how hard that can be, but don’t give up now :( you’re so far through the process and who knows, tomorrow could be the day. Sending love and hopes
