I entered at Detroit airport, together with my us citizen wife, to activate IR1 visa.
The officers were super friendly. They did send us to a second room to wait while they did their paper work, instead of doing everything in that booth after the passport line.
The officers had no questions in that sense at all. He just confirmed a phone number and the address the green card was going to be sent to.
There was nothing to worry about at all.

If you have not entered the U.S. yet, you do not have an I-551 stamp. You have an unused visa. This is likely why they are not extending an offer. That visa is still worthless for getting a job. Its worth happens when you travel to the U.S. and you are admitted for entry on that visa.

You need to provide I-9 documents. Your foreign passport plus the endorsed visa will be a List A I-9 document. So definitely fly into the U.S., and while there fill out an I-9
    ( https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-9-paper-version.pdf )
and bring it, your passport, and you to the employer’s office. Show them in the I-9 instructions how your passport and endorsed visa is a valid List A document:

    LIST A
    Documents that Establish
    Both Identity and
    Employment Authorization

    [..]

Foreign passport that contains a temporary 1-551 stamp or temporary 1-551 printed notation on a machine-readable immigrant visa

https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-resources/handbook-for-employers-m-274/120-acceptable-documents-for-verifying-employment-authorization-and-identity/121-list-a-documents-that-establish-identity-and-employment-authorization shows a partial example of a endorsed visa acting as an I-551. Partial because it does not show a stamp.

https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2019-Mar/2019 Carrier Information Guide - ENGLISH.pdf has a proper example

lol, well employers of Indians file new I-140s each day, even though everyone knows it will be over 150 years
Based on what has been posted to this topic so far, it is looking like waiting in Germany.

    Hey!
just wanted to update this post with some new information in case someone else is researching the same thing

I had followed up with HR and they said they were fine with starting as long as the SSN had been applied for.
I entered the US on 5/16, official hire date was 5/21, first day of work was 5/22.
I didn’t end up receiving my SSN until 6/20.  (Had to apply in person, after not receiving the SSN after 3 weeks after entry)

i got my first paycheck on 6/9 for work completed from 5/21 - 6/2, although I didn’t have a SSN then yet, my paycheck stub says taxes were withheld.

By ensuring diversity you stand a much better chance to fill niche markets. It also will prevent certain societal changes that might be detrimental to the country. Homogenous societies do often not fare well do to the lack of outside impulses.

Every person sponsoring an immigrant is financially responsible for said immigrant, meaning the sponsor is liable for cost. Also many parents and most siblings are still of working age when coming to the US and able to contribute. Additionally for some countries retirement benefits of the home country carry over, so little risk, decent pay out.

Alright, I will bite. Marriage to a US citizen by no means is a short cut. As a German citizen marrying a US soldier in Germany the paperwork started even before we were married. We needed to file papers with the post commander to even get married, jump through hoops at the German court for my husband`s previous divorce from a USC and all that was not even starting the process of getting a green card.

While in the US I attended a community college and a university, worked, paid property taxes, ... and all while not being entitled to anything from the US government.

We have been back in Germany for some time and now my husband would like to return home. Guess what after 27 years of marriage I still have to jump through all the immigration hoops for a good year to two. A short cut it is not!

So you do not believe that families should be allowed to live together. Why not prioritize the spouse of an American tex payer over someone without any ties to the US?

How do immigrants benefit US economy?

In my opinion, here is the minimal list:

    Income taxes
    Property taxes
    Sales taxes
Purchases / services from local businesses
Supporting banking system by using credit and spending. More people translates into more spending, benefiting economy.

Also, how does staying / not staying in marriage change benefit to the US from all of those streams above? Why does it matter whether immigrant is skilled or not in the grand scheme of things? There's tons of unskilled job positions open that many US citizens won't take due to low pay. There's also no shortage of skilled immigrants coming to the US taking high paying jobs.

There is quite a lot wrong, but the first question is of course why does this matter, they system is what it is.

Not really, because healthcare is private, so if they pay into it, how is it a burden ?

A shortcut that takes 2-3 years. That’s a long shortcut lol

Thank God they aren’t. So what you’re saying is that ideally, they would have to sign a sort of contract to stay “committed to the marriage” at all costs? Even if spouse is abusive or cheats?

Have you ever heard of family reunification? So are you suggesting that LPRs leave their families behind?

    Hi VJ-community,
I entered the US in the middle of May on IR-1 visa, I’m still waiting for my SSN since DHS seemed to have „lost“ the application, whatever that means and the local SSN office wouldn’t let me apply for a new number until 3 weeks after I entered.

Without a SSN, I also cannot get a Kansas drivers license or state ID yet.

Today I went into a vape shop, which had a 21+ sign in the window. I am almost 30 years old and had my German ID and even my passport with me.
I was asked for an ID, and then asked to leave, because they couldn’t „verify my age“ with my German ID or passport…… I guess they need to scan the ID and foreign IDs cannot be scanned by their computer program.
That very much felt like discrimination.
    Is that legal?

I know it will only take a few weeks to get a SSN now, and this isn’t really a life threatening problem or anything, but it still didn’t feel good to be asked to leave.

has anyone else had similar experiences?

I helped a friend who wanted the SSN more than the EAD, suggested he go down as soon as he had his EAD and that worked, I know when I applied for mine s few days after I entered the lady asked me if I wanted to know what it was and wrote it down for me. Card came a week later. I have the card somewhere but have never needed it.

I went to get my SSN about two weeks after I arrived. The lady I sat with was really unfriendly and said she couldn't do anything for me because I didn't have a green card, despite my insistence that the stamped visa acted as one for a year. She also mentioned that my middle name was in the incorrect field in the SAVE (is that what it's called? It's been so long) system which I recall was a minor issue back then. I recall calling CBP about it and they were like 🤷‍♀️, lol.

She handed me a piece of paper and sent me on my way telling me I wasn't eligible for an SSN. The paper said congratulations we'll send your SSN ASAP. Got it a week later and almost nine years later I still have no idea what any of that was about. Not sure if she couldn't read or if she figured it out at the end and was too embarrassed to say as much... I thought maybe a mistake happened somewhere but I've been recklessly using my SSN to date with no prison time thus far. Well, I had someone aggressively tell me that LPRs don't get SSNs a few years back but I still somehow have it to this day!

I was finally able to apply for the SSN at the SS office last week.
I had initially checked on the DS-260 to be issued a SSN, but it still has not arrived.
so I called the local SS office 2 weeks after entry and they told me I couldn’t apply until 3 weeks after entry, because i checked that box on DS-260.
so exactly 3 weeks after entry, i went to the SS office in person and they let me apply for one, because they still didn’t see the initial application in their system.
I should hopefully get the SSN and card next week
