SSN should be obtained first, before marriage to save a host of problems that can crop up. But you could also literally apply for the license before or on the same day. SSN is not required for the foreign fiance to get marriage license.

If I recall correctly we went to the SSA, court clerk for license, and the bank all on the same day.

Hello to all of you who replied to my post.  I don't know what happened but no matter what I did, I couldn't reply.  I could see your replies but as soon as I logged in, it would block the topic.  It seems to be working now so I wanted to say thank you all so much for your support and responses.  They were all very helpful.
UPDATE:  I ended up moving back to the states about a month ago.  I applied for the i130 on the 18 March 2024.  I came over with my 2 children and we are living wtih my mom.  It's been such a relaxed time being with her.  I have got my driving lic updated, a new bank account, and my children are registered to start school in the fall.  All taxes are currently being filed along with the FBAR's.  They have been signed off by the agency so will head off this coming week but had an amendment to make.  Because my husband had a green card, he was required to file his taxes as well.  So we will be all up to date on both sides.

Now that we are all set up here and sorted, I will start my job search this week.  The market here is excellent so should be fairly easy.  Looking at the affidavit of support, once I'm here for at least 6 months, I can combine my income with my mums and with both our incomes, we will meet the financial requirements.  If we can't combine, she will be able to meet the income requirements between her income and savings.

Feeling great about our process but not so great about being apart from my husband and our children being away from their daddy.  We are just counting down the days and even though we are still at the beginning, we are closer than we were back on the 18 March!

Thanks again so much for all the help.

Your partner arrived in the USA on a K1 visa and you married there… she then applied for a GC. OP is already married and her husband will obtain a different visa which upon entry to the US will be endorsed and serve as a temporary green card for 1 year.

I disagree with this statement. Having SSN solves a lot of issues. AOS can take a year or so, and not being able to drive / bank / build evidence of married life is painful. AOS is restrictive as is, it's not worth depriving the new immigrant of vital things. Using passport as ID is a bad idea in my opinion for at least three reasons:

    1. Passport is a document for travelling outside of the US. If lost, immigrant will have issues travelling home in case of emergency.
    2. Passport has endorsed immigrant visa which is proof of legal entry. If lost and if ever questioned by USCIS, it's hard to prove legal entry without it! No proof of legal entry = no adjustment in most cases.
    3. Furthermore, if immigrant only has passport as ID, if lost - they have NO ID and no easy way go get a new ID. State ID / DL is a much better choice to show around. Passport is best kept safe at home when not travelling.
    4. Many Americans cannot understand / don't want to / doubt foreign issued documents including passports. It's a much better idea to show state ID / DL for routine identity verification. Don't you want the immigrant to integrate in US society faster?

After citizenship is done and you have a passport? My husband and I recently went through boxes and boxes of stuff. First we made sure to scan everything, including old evidences, official documents, official correspondence, NOAs, and anything pertinent to the case history. We made many digital copies and labeled them thoroughly. Once that was done we only saved official items/correspondences/NOAs, and important documents. That came to a small stack of papers and we put that into a safe. It's weird how some stuff is hard to let go, but it brought back some memories.

Hi OP: I know it's confusing. I think several of us here have given us the best advice we can, and I've personally been through it with my husband.

Again: A DTP, TdaP, TD, etc will all suffice. You cannot get a single pertussis shot for men in the UK. That is not what the instructions are implying, even if they are confusing. Knightsbridge will give the missing shot required, if you pay for it. As you can see on the visa medical's site. It is £70.

I understand there's confusion about polio. Where polio might not be offered in a combo shot in the states, in the UK it is, as the other poster I linked to mentioned as "Revaxis". That will not be what Knightsbridge will give. For years on this forum there is always confusion about the P for polio vs the P for pertussis, and ultimately it won't matter. What shots I mentioned above will be the shots accepted.

If it were a problem to you and your future spouse, he could easily get a single shot for pertussis in the US from any pharmacy and simply get his vaccines recertified for AOS purposes. I don't recommend that unless there is a general health concern, afterall pertussis is increasingly becoming a problem globally. It is still a moot point, because Knightsbridge can give the missing shot (DTP) needed.

Btw, he will get no assistance from the embassy about this. It's not their wheelhouse. It's Knightsbridge.

Furthermore my husband went to his doctor before his Knightsbridge visit, gave them the list of shots needed and got them. I can't tell you if the DTP or Tdap he received actually was the formulation that Knightsbridge believes it to be, but it was accepted by Knightsbridge and that's all that matters. We also had those same results recertified by a US civil surgeon because of an AOS RFE (that was in error) and it was also just fine. I know it's a confusing, scary, annoying, frustrating process - but do not be concerned about it. Make sure your guy gets the shot at Knightsbridge. Don't leave there without it.

Knightsbridge will give out the required vaccination if you are willing to pay for it. If you do not, you can get it stateside at any doctor or pharmacy, keep receipt of it, and get your vaccines all recertified at US civil surgeon. However as Nik had originally stated, TD, Tdap, DTP, OR DtaP all get accepted too. My husband sure as heck didn't chase down a doctor and argue the finer points of pertussis  - he just got a Tdap. No one had an issue about that. DTP from Knightsbridge runs about £70 I think. https://visamedicals.co.uk/united-states/

Adults, unless you are female, don't get a straight whooping cough vaccine in the UK. But anyone can get the accepted vaccine of DTP, Tdap, DtaP, or TD. If doctor is being a pain about it, Knightsbridge will be more than happy with $$s.
