My wife traveled with a GC about to expire (still valid when she departed) and she had no issues. We filed the I751 in the proper filing window, and while she was away her GC expired, but she had her valid extension letter. I have never heard of an airline clerk doing anything related to six months validity, but when my wife was traveling with her extension letter, she did have an airline employee ask to keep it, luckily she had a copy to give her. You should have no issues traveling (and re-entering the US) on a valid GC regardless of how long before it expires. The CBP carrier guide does not mention anything related to a six month period, so take a copy of that with you. To my knowledge, other than showing the check in clerk your valid visa allowing you to enter the U.S. you do not have to wear a badge saying “K1”. As to US CBP, you go through the visitor line to the best of my knowledge, but usually there are liaison officers in the entry area of the airports that you can ask for sure when you arrive.
