Hi everyone!

We submitted our K-1 first batch of paperwork a few months ago so we're just waiting now.

The thing i'm wondering about is the medical exam mentioned on the webpage of the Swedish embassy, where the interview will be held (i'm from Finland).

Is the medical exam and bloodwork and vaccines a must for someone from the EU countries? It kinda sounded like a lot, going to a specific doctor and get all the x-rays and vaccines and stuff. Plus it looks to be quite expensive too.

Paying the fee's is not gonna be a problem, but i'm a bit freaked out and anxious about the whole ordeale and i couldn't find any info about people going through the medical exam and such.

So is it actually a think to get ready for or is it something that it's not a usual request for the K-1?

Thank you all a lot!

This is standard and not optional. You must have the Immigrant Medical Exam or you will not be approved for your K-1 visa

Yes, you absolutely must do this. They will not approve your visa if you do not. My medical paperwork took a long time to get to the Swedish embassy, and I had to get a denial paper (but they told me as soon as they had the paperwork we would be approved).

That being said.. lower your shoulders, take a deep breath and I will tell you it is going to be ok. I am a very anxious person, and I absolutely do not like doctors. I have to be /REALLY/ sick before I go (which was dumb.. I used to have free healthcare before I moved to the US! lol) and this whole ordeal was terrifying to me. I had to order tickets with a plane, get a hotel, find the right doctor, have the right papers and most of all do all the things required. I dreaded this part for months at end, it was probably the worst part for me, the interview made me a bit nervous but thinking about doing this was super scary.

But then I did it. And it was over before I knew it; everything was fine and now I am living in the US with my soon-to-be husband. So believe me when I say you can do it, and it is going to be ok. 😃

Yes it is a must. I just went through the medical in Helsinki, it was very simple, but you do need to have all the vacciness up to date, they were very strict about it. You need to have all the vacciness printed out from "omakanta", or if you still have the old "neuvolakortti", you can have that too.

I had one vaccine that i needed to take in the medical exam, and it was quite expensive to add on it, so i recommend to have everything ready before the medical exam. But yeah it's mandatory to everyone who applies visa in US.

K-1s can defer vaccinations until they enter the US, can they not?

Im not sure, atleast they told me when i booked my appointment that i need to have all my vaccines on date. And if not they will give them to me in the appointment and it's extra fee.

That's how it was in Finland and my experience.

Get them done before the Medical is always my recommendation

I would certainly get them all up to date as soon as possible.  There are horror stories about people who waited until they have entered the US.

They can but then you are stuck doing the vaccines here and then hoping you can find a civil surgeon who will do just the vaccine assessment part of the I-693. Most will not do that and you end up doing the whole medical over again. Jaycel and I got really lucky to find one here in Denver to do that for us because she was missing the Polio Vaccine. They were the only one out of roughly 25 that I called that would do just the vaccine assessment,
