Passport expiring after only a year?

My parents both applied for a passport at the same time. My dad got his a month ago. My mom got her's today. Her passport expires in 2024. Any clue why this would be? My dad's expires in 10 years like mine does (i got mine in 2021). We're traveling in Feb/March so I don't think it'll be an issue for this trip.

Can you give us some more context? Are these US passports or from another country?

US passports. We are all US citizens by birth.

The passport expiring in one year is truly strange. Are you sure it's not an error? If there was no note or official explanation my hunch is this was a typo.

My mom checked the envelope again and there is no note. I guess she should contact the passport office to see whats going on then?

I would for sure as it just doesn't make sense otherwise. Even infants get issued passports for 5 years.

Here they list issues with a naturalization certificate as a possible reason???  There could be different reasons too.  Was it a first passport or a renewal?  It sounds like you need more info from the passport office.

Were the passport applications submitted in the US or at an Embassy/Consulate overseas?

 

Was this a renewal or a first-time passport application?

In America. Alabama.

First time passport.

My dad got his after around 8 weeks. It took 13 weeks for my mom to get her's.

Then it's an error in quality control and printing. Call the passport center and ask to have it fixed. Should be free of charge and they should expedite it.

Hmmmm.  It is actually difficult for an error in validity to occur in the passport processing system.  Have you gotten the envelope with the documentation submitted with the application back (it is sent separately from the passport)?

 

I suspect there might have been some issue with proof of identity or citizenship that was submitted --maybe it was a copy and they needed an original, or it was difficult to read, or unclear name documentation (identity documents and citizenship documents in different names, with no documentation of the difference such as a marriage certificate), or something else -- and they want additional/original proof submitted.  It was sufficient for them to believe her identity and that she is a US citizen, but insufficient for required documentation, so they ussued the limited vaIidity passport rather tban a denial. If so, she should receive some information on how to submit what they need and the passport will be reissued or amended to full validity.

you nailed it. She just now called and this is what they said. She will receive a letter soon stating what she needs to provide.
