Gov. Josh Shapiro on Tuesday announced that Pennsylvania will become the 24th state to implement automatic voter registration.

In an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Shapiro said everyone who goes to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a new or renewed driver’s license will be automatically registered to vote, unless the individual chooses to opt out.

 

Non Citizens look out, the consequences are very bad.

Was at the DMV today with my stepson ( Greencard Holder) he passed his driving test to get his license, and when I was reviewing the license information I noticed she had automatically selected US Citizen for status, and for voter registration had marked Clark ( as in Clark county). Had to make sure she changed his Citizenship, and print out the ineligible to register to vote. They just click and clack away on their keyboard with no regard for screwing someones life up drastically. Definitely good advice to watch everything they do, and make sure you review everything.

As with anything it boils down to incompetent employees at the DMV, the hellbane of most everyone's existence.

It is one thing individual employees getting ahead of themselves but now the State is involved and is risking non Citizens legal status by their actions.

 

Maybe something for the Courts, a class action?

Wow!  Just, wow!  This should not happen.  Any GC holder who is limited in English, or ignorance to this new law will have to pay consequences.  I would NOT want my status threatened by an incompetent person at the DMV.

This is also bad for people fleeing stalkers or abusers because your address can become easier to find when you are registered to vote regardless of citizenship status. Those were the two groups in my mind when I saw these news, people screwing up immigration and DV survivors.
