Official English Translation

Yes, I know the answer to this ridiculous question but I've determined to find people to tell me how obvious the answer is anyway. 

 

Filling out the petition for 130. Instructions say verbatim: "if your documents are in a foreign language, upload a full English translation and the translator's certification with each original document."

 

I speak Spanish fluently but I'm not an "official" translator. I would like to translate the document and provide a signed document that says something like "I'm not an official translator but I speak and write Spanish fluently and have translated this document from Spanish to English."

 

What do you think? It will work? or better to find an official translator?

Anyone who is fluent in both languages can translate a document.  You certify the translation by including the following statement (example):

Seems problematic, since you are denigrating your qualifications and you have not certified it.

You can translate yourself and use  prose. consistent with the  regulation, which says:

 

Translations. Any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS shall be accompanied by a full English language translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate, and by the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English.

 

So with the translation you would include this statement:

 

I, ____________, certify

 

* this to be a complete and accurate translation of the document entitled _____________, from __________ to English, and

 

* that I am competent to translate from ____________ to English.

Read the instruction correctly when you file form I130 also be a good student before you file it what that means if document wasn’t in english meaning that you need to find English translator that was certified by the US embassy where your spouse will get interview. If it in Spain that you need to look up information online there has to be list of certified english translator by US embassy in Spain.

Being a good student of the I-130 instructions means knowing that certification by the US embassy is NOT required.  As mentioned by the other posters, anyone who is fluent in English and the other language may translate the documents to be submitted to USCIS.  No embassy certification necessary.

Well for my case when I petition for my wife is always have peace of mind to get certified translator recognize by US embassy but here the key you need to find what is the best for you! We just give you an idea but the rest is up to you because I don’t know how in Spain what is works over there, Good lucks!

The bold above is wrong. Anybody can certify they are fluent in both languages, and sign the certification.  Correct advice has already been given to that effect. I will add that although the petitioner CAN be the translator, I suggest they DO the translation (the work) and have another of their bilingual friends do the certifying.

 

The translation is what is certified, not the translator.  Exception would be China.
