Breastfeeding person

Yesterday I stumbled upon a YouTube video that compiled reactions and opinions of women regarding new terms such as breastfeeding person or birthing people - used instead of breastfeeding woman or pregnant woman-.

 

After a quick search I found out it is not THAT new, but I was honestly clueless about it. 

 

Without this getting into the political realm, I would like to know what the women around the forum think of this particular linguistical shift.

We were having a discussion about IWD at work yesterday.  Myself (Female, Canadian), my female colleague (Argentinian) and another colleague (male, Pakistani Canadian). Our male colleague was talking about how a women's walk in his area of Pakistan erupted into violence - not the intent.  He's been outside of Pakistan for many years and does agree that a paradigm shift is needed and women should have equal rights, but it's difficult to change this thinking in his country.  

 

We got into a discussion about inclusivity and how we agree, there needs to be inclusivity, but sometimes it can be detrimental when a certain metric, especially in "western" nations is set to have a certain number of women and minorities in positions of leadership.  My female colleague and I agree that as women, we'd much rather see a person put into a position because they are legitimately qualified, NOT because they meet a metric.  Sticking people into roles solely because they meet a metric damages the perception of the person in the role and sets them up for failure. This does NOT create equality. 

 

The general conclusion was the people who claim to be advocates for various minority groups (mostly in the West) are often the ones behaving badly while claiming "rights advocacy" on behalf of individuals who legitimately belong to the communities.  But those legitimate members of the community are often happy to just be peacefully recognized and have rights, but don't need the giant spotlight thrust upon them because the badly behaved advocates set the wrong impression.

 

Talk to most people, and I suspect you'd come to find that the majority still follow the science of sex which indicates only female sexed individuals can bear children.  What gender a person identifies as is an entirely different kettle of fish.  

 

Back to the original question of how people feel, I am a woman who has birthed 2 children and nursed both.  I don't want to be called a "birthing person" or a "breastfeeding person".  It's different if my kids walk in and jokingly say "Birth giver, may I have..." but I'm ultimately "mother" and by definition, a mother is a female who has given birth to offspring.

I always wonder how the pet-store personnel manage to keep the male fish from fighting each other.  Seems no way to know what sex they are beyond trial and error.
