Could our age difference be a problem at the interview?

I finally got my interview date for my IR-1 visa and naturally I am not going to spend the next four weeks worrying until it’s finally here. 😄

I read in a lawyers article that a reason for denying an IR-1 visa could be a big age difference.

My husband and I are 16 years apart in age and met when I was 23.

Could this be seen as negative? Is there something I could do preemptively to avoid anything like that? Bringing extra pictures with our families and such to show that everyone in the family is supportive of us?

I’m so worried now 😄

Don’t be.   Going through a Western Europe  consulate where the male is older than the female is not the “reason to deny” as cited in the article you read.   That pertains more to an entirely different demographic, different consulates etc.

As with any spousal visa, the strongest evidence you can show regarding the bonafides of the marriage is time spent together in person.

Age gap by itself is not the issue, but it could be a red flag if it goes against cultural norms.  If you are a German interviewing in Frankfurt, your age gap is not likely to cause the interviewing officer to suspect your marriage.  That said, even if unlikely, the officer could ask you about it.  Just answer truthfully.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Our age gap is 14 years…(hubby older), and we dated only a few months with one 2 week visit (me to the USA).
Age question was not even raised..interview lasted maybe 5 minutes..

Try not to stress if possible. Breathe in- breathe out!!!

I am from Germany and had my interview in Frankfurt. We had a 17 year age gap and the only question the interviewing officer had about it was "Are your parents ok with that?"... my response was something along the line that they are used to me dating older guys. She laughed and carried on with her questions. Lol

The age difference issue has a context that includes the woman being much older and the man coming a high fraud country where such a (reverse) age difference is not culturally accepted.  Even those issues are overcome with time spent together in person.

Thanks to everyone being so encouraging! The question didn’t come up at the interview ☺️

it was way more relaxed than I thought it would be
