get the restricted wording off my social security card before my green card expires?

I just realized I never got that wording removed off my social and I’m worried. Will it cause me problems?

I filed my I-751 about a month ago, so my green card expires soonish.

If you work or plan to work it is a good idea as an unrestricted SS card is a substitute I-9 document

@sweethrtt if you don't remove the wording, you may end up with pains similar to this person

I don't think there's penalty, just get the words removed ASAP while you have a valid green card / extension letter / I-551 stamp.

Also, make sure your employer knows you're a LPR, you may need to pay more taxes depending on your status (e.g. if you were on E-2 and similar, you paid less)

It’s like you worked really hard to make a very delicious dish, but you tell yourself to wait 1-2 years before eating it..

Dunno about you but for most of the past 2 years where I lived, SSA wasn’t letting people walk in to update SS cards.

@Mike E I risked it in 2021 and sent everything by mail (don't try this at home lol). Was lucky enough to receive GC and SS card with no wording in the mail fairly quickly (less than 2 weeks). California.

By law, every LPR needs to carry proof of status with them at all times.  That is, they need to keep their green card with them always.  OldUser mailed the GC to SSA, which means he/she did not have the GC on hand for those 2 weeks.  This was illegal.

I know, but it’s a gray area because even the SSA site says to mail it.

AFAIK SSA rescinded that. Possibly because USCIS lawyers advised it that it was coercing LPRs to break the law.  Some SSA offices did ignore the memo.
