N400 and passport question

I had my n400 interview two months ago - June 8. It’s exactly 2 months today and I am still waiting for either a decision or return of my original passport which the officer decided to keep, take a look at it when less busy and send it back as soon as possible. 

 

is it normal for an officer to keep my passport after n400 interview and not send it back to me as promised, seeing that I had purchased a plane ticket for an important and emergency trip to my home country next two weeks? 
 

I called USCIS customer service and was told to send a form to request it, which I did but haven’t heard anything yet. 
 

Is there anything else I can do to get my passport before my trip in two weeks.

I'm sorry to hear. I don't think it's normal, for proof of ID at my interview; I had to show my Green card. Then at my Oath ceremony, they confiscated it (obviously).
 

I will bother them nonstop about the passport. It doesn’t seem right to be holding on to it

If you were approved for citizenship and denounced your former citizenship then, maybe they took it to destroy it? 

 

When I took my naturalization test, I had to denounce my former citizenship, therefore, I could no longer hold a passport in my native country.

Is this only for the countries where the US dont allow duel citizenship?.  I never heard IO confiscating documents during interview 🤷🏾‍♂️. To the op good luck & i hope everything works out just in time for your trip.

Get an InfoPass appointment immediately and go to the Field Office in person. 
Have them contact N-400 Unit Supervisor and/or track your IO and passport. 
 

Call customer service , say Infopass and insist it’s an emergency ( pending travel) or try online interactive. 
 

It is an out of the ordinary event , nonetheless go get it back.

No I am not approved yet, not worried about being approved because I will eventually be approved. I also do not worry about how long before it’s approved.

 considering my birth country, I am allowed to have dual citizenship. This looks like a strange situation but I can not explain why me and at this critical time.

Denounce your former citizenship? No, that is not required. At the oath ceremony one renounces one's allegiance to their former country, not one's citizenship...

The US does not care one way or another. Now, the other country may care and take away that citizenship but that has nothing to do with the US or USCIS & everything to do with the other country's laws.

The foreign passport is property of the foreign government, so USCIS would not ask for it to destroy it.  That's also why it's strange that the IO kept the foreign passport.

And you don't denounce/renounce your former citizenship. You renounce allegiance to that country. Two different things.

 

When I took my naturalization test, I had to denounce my former citizenship, therefore, I could no longer hold a passport in my native country. - Sure; but it's not up to USCIS to be confisticating your previous passport. It's up to the previous country to do that. Meaning in your case, USCIS should have given/gave your passport back. Just that you can't use it to travel to your previous country if the country doesn't allow dual citizenship.
