'It’s really scary': Homeless camps cause unrest in a Southeast Portland neighborhood

PORTLAND, Ore. — Tents, broken-down cars, piles of garbage and RVs line the streets off Southeast 80th and Powell.  It's a residential neighborhood turned nightmare for families who live there.  [...]

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I think we are on the cusp of a transition where  civilization in the USA moves from  between traditional urban settings to semi rural settings governed by HOAs that keep trespassers out.

In my neighborhood in Silicon Valley we lived in a townhouse community. Despite being in an HOA, the presence of homeless was increasing and there were times we didn’t feel safe walking on the public streets outside HOA.

We’ve since relocated  to unincorporated Pima county in Arizona.  The HOA owns the streets and the nearest homeless camp is 30 minutes away in Tucson. We deliberately bought a home that is not in a gated community because of the hassles involved in admitting visitors, but it is physically possible to gate the community if needed.

Ultimately I see cities failing and collapsing across the country to be replaced by privately owned and operated unincorporated communities that legally do not have to tolerate trespassers.  Such communities will encompass residential, commercial, and industrial.

That is what Towns/Cities originally were.

Often they had a wall around them, gates that controlled access and a paid force to provide law and order.

Ten thousand years ago a city or town was controlled by either an absolute ruler or rarely, a democracy among a privileged minority.  So even if the majority of a town in ancient times was of the same mind set as that of a modern town, their opinions didn’t matter.

Extending the voting franchise has directly led to the collapse of order in modern urban settings.

The HOA model that currently keeps disorder and lawlessness at bay is as you allude, a restoration of the original purpose of towns and governance model.

HOAs, for the most part, suck and while their intent may be good at first, they tend to limit the people within as much as "protect" them.

Seems to be a predominantly western US problem. or perhaps a liberal state problem.

My son lived in Portland for the last 5 years, but knew it was time to leave.  Too many homeless and drug addicts on the street and ending up in the ER where he was working.  He came back here to SW Florida as we do not have that problem here.

As long as they can monitor Greyhound buses and keep the Bidementia night-flights of illegals going to New York instead.

A common complaint from the long timers here, like myself, is that we are becoming just like Ft. Lauderdale.

Talked to several patients lately that are leaving the area and relocating to Alabama.

Cannot say that I blame them.  The Keys have changed quite a bit the past several years, too.

I could see the movement away from traditional cities for a lot of reasons.  I expect the potential for rapid spread of communicable diseases would also be a reason.

Except the most versatile system will be ignored, buses.  But no worries, the Dems seem as enamored by trains as Sheldon Cooper.

The private sector often addresses problems better than the government.  It is difficult to replace incumbents on the HOA board. Thus if you are shopping a home in neighborhood free these Obamavilles, you can be confident the HOA’s territory will continue to be so.

Or you can select the freedom of choice outside an HOA, a freedom that includes homeless parking their RVs from the set of Breaking Bad and tents on the street in front of you and your neighbors parking their cars on the front lawn.
