Hi. My wife is Canadian and the interview is June 10th in Montreal. Our flights go out of and return to Seattle. She will not have her passport on the return flight. How does she enter the US and Canada without her Passport while it's being processed? Thanks

She is not legally living in the US yet......She might have to wait in her country for her passport like everyone else.

She can enter Canada by land on her Canadian birth certificate and government issued photo ID.

On the return, CBP might admit her using her a Canadian birth certificate but I’ve never heard of that working since WHTI.  But I’ve never heard of it not working either.

Canada does issue temporary second passports though

I've seen it work, but I wouldn't count on it.  In her situation, her passport isn't lost, or misplaced.

Possible alternatives:

- ask the consulate to return the passport after the interview because of imminent need. Ship it back later.

- get a second Canadian passport. You'll have to demonstrate your need to travel to Passport Canada while the passport is held at the consulate.  This one is far-fetched, since they prefer to only do it when it's a continuous/ongoing problem.  They can, but they probably won't see your situation as problematic enough.
