I feel very bad for you but you should have known. Cultural difference. Everyone should know their spouse's culture well before marrying so there are no ugly suprises.

Cheating is cultural?

Yes.....................but they don't call it cheating.

I beg your pardon, my husband is from Nigeria and he would call that cheating.

I was not being negative at all. You asked "Cheating is cultural" and I answered "Yes". When you travel the world quite a bit, you learn about a lot of diverse cultures.

Here is the Wiki entry for you, it is pretty informational:

I actually did not ask anything I was just reading the thread, and read that cheating is being passed off a cultural difference...and the OPs husband is Nigerian, therefore it was stated that cheating on ones wife is a cultural difference in Nigeria. Not all Nigerians practice polygamy. Please dont generalize a nation.

I would advise you to get in touch with a divorce attourney and also recommend that you go to the interview instead of not going at all and then tell them that you no longer wish to sponsor him and you are filing for a divorce because he cheated on you.

Good luck

huh? If an individual practices polygamy then it could hardly be classified as cheating. Cheating is done surreptitiously, for the most part with one party none the wiser. Polygamy, on the other hand, is an open act and usually embraced by the parties.

Also, did I read correctly? The OP's husband is here on a J-1 visa? If so, you may not be responsible for him financially. I would definitely recommend talking to an attorney ASAP to figure out your options. If you haven't confronted your husband yet, and you have proof of the infidelity, I would be sure to try to document that infidelity before you confront him and he can deny it or back track.

Good luck!

If you are absolutely sure he is cheating then seek the advice of a divorce attorney and/or an immigration attorney. I would attend the interview if I were you and state your case then. Make sure though you know your legal position before the interview, or as others have said, have an attorney attend with you. It sounds like he just wants the GC, but is stupid enough to get caught with his pants down. A cheating, stupid, broke husband is no one's idea of a catch, and he needs to be out of here with his tail between his legs. Good luck to you.

That may not be correct. While the OP isn't financially responsible for him while he was here on a J-1 visa, the financial sponsorship changes with AOS. Thats why the K-1 visa process has 2 affidavits of support. I-134 for support during the I-94 period and I-864 for AOS and afterwards.

Cheating is Cheating anywhere, pluto to uranus to here.

However, some cultures do carelessly cheat more than others, for example Colombia. Colombian men seem to be more dogs than American men. It's just my opinion but I believe it's a fact.

Getting a divorce attorney to come to an AOS interview can be quite expensive. Most charge $250+ an hour, so with waiting time & possible longer interview time to explain divorce, you may end up with a $1000 charge.

Isn't it that if you don't go to the interview, he goes alone that it is considered abandonment?

Ok, the following may not be the best suggesstion, but I'd be so ticked off about the cheating that I would be mean & coniving... I'd reschedule his AOS interview time & not tell him. So if no one shows up, that for sure would be a denial.
