Is a State ID actually required?

The IDs they asked me for was my DL, two of my three Swedish passports and my greencard.

No reason not to have a State ID, surely most people are able to spend ~$35 every 5 years to keep a valid state ID (or DL, whichever one prefers).

I never got a State ID because I have never needed one. So the thought never crossed my mind, “I should go get a State ID.”

I had my interview at Newark, they did ask for  State ID which I said I don't have one - and it ended there -.

I took my deed and electricity bill as proof of residency. No hassle and no headaches

Thanks for sharing your experience.

They can ask for a Costco card, a Sam’s card, and a BJ’s card too if they want.

There is no requirement a US LPR or citizen or national hold a state ID.  And since state IDs aren’t free, such a requirement would infringe the 5th amendment.

Prediction: OP will experience at most some grumbling about not having state ID and will be approved.

5th amendment???

Do you have a green card? Do have a passport? Then you are good.

You were correct.

Had my interview earlier today. The IO asked to see my Passport and then Green Card. He then did ask to see a State ID or Driver’s License, but when I said I did not have one he didn’t seem to care at all and just moved on to the English test.

A passport is a valid ID it has all pertinent info on you in any database for Government. Once i forgot my passport crossing into mexico for the day, they scanned my DL and seen i have a passport and let me go. They are tied together now
