About a week and a half ago, we went to our k1 visa interview after having gone through the process for over a year and a half. At the interview, they gave us approval and even gave us a letter stating our approval and what the next steps would be. I left my passport with the consulate because they needed to do further processing, and they said to expect it back in about a week. Today we checked the case status online and it said: "refused". In the subtext, it said that our case would remain refused while undergoing administrative processing.

Does this mean that our visa has been refused, or is this more of a placeholder while they process our visa? Is this a common thing to happen with people who have had their k1 visas approved?

No. Denied is denied. Refused is the new Administration process  period. Wait 1 or 2 days and check again.

It means they are performing background checks and/or processing your case.  It is relatively common, especially for MENA countries.  Check you case status the next few days.  If it doesn't change to issued on about a week or so, contact the embassy.

Something similar happened to my fiance as well. A little over 2 weeks ago she had her K1 interview and she got an approval letter from the officer afterwards. About an hour later she gets an email saying her visa has been refused under 221 g and that she needs to fill out the questionnaire in that email and also the status on the CEAC said refused. Needless to say we were shocked and very upset but we replied to the email with the answers on the questionnaire. This was 18 days ago and nothing since. Status still says refused.

Wow yah that's basically exactly what happened with us down to a T except the email they sent us didn't explicitly say ours was refused, just the case status checker. And yeah, we haven't heard anything back yet either but it's only been maybe 4 or 5 business days. It did say that administrative processing usually takes up to 90 days, but I'm hoping it doesn't take that long for us.

Hey! Did you guys get a reply from the embassy? We are in the same boat. My fiancé had his K1 interview on June 24th and received a verbal approval from the Consulate Officer. Two days later, he received an email with Supplemental questions, and our case has been in administrative provessing since then. Please keep me updated on your timelines.. the wait is so frustrating!

Yeah that sounds really similar to our case. We're still waiting. Although I did notice something interesting about the status. It seems to update every few days. So even if it's still saying"refused", it shows that the embassy is at least actively updating it (I think. Not entire sure though.)

for us, it updated a few times in the first two weeks, but no updates since July 6th... : | It sucks when the Consulate officer gives you a verbal approval, and you think that you are finally done with all the wait, and this new thing comes up. first few days were very depressing for us.

and any updates on ceac? it's almost been a month since our last update :/ I wonder what the updates actually mean.

The date changed daily for the first few days but now it just changes about once a week. Status still says refused

We feel the same way, its very depressing after not only being given a verbal approval but an approval letter as well
