The fallacy of white privilege — and how it’s corroding society

By Rav Arora

Last month, I retweeted a comment by a contrarian writer who questioned whether racism was to blame for the spread of the coronavirus, and a close (white) friend responded to me with a well-meaning text:

“I feel it is my calling to help end the oppression people of color like you face in our society,” he wrote. “I understand I have white privilege. And that has consequences.”

His message left me feeling bewildered. What “oppression” had I actually faced? And what “privilege” had society conferred upon my friend because of his white skin?

Growing up as a Sikh, turbaned boy in the majority-white environment of British Columbia, Canada, I was a constant target of bullying throughout my elementary school years. On bus rides home, I remember having to sit in the back where the older, “cool” kids hung out, and they used to jump up and slap the top part of my turban. I was consistently harassed with comments like “Go back to where you came from” and “You don’t belong here.”

Upon immigrating from India when I was 4, my family suffered tremendous economic hardships and cultural challenges. My father drove a taxi at night and my mom worked many menial jobs as a cook, housecleaner, barista and motel cleaner. It’s fair to say my family never had success handed to them on a silver platter. But more than a decade post-immigration, we have found our footing in Western society, with my dad making nearly six figures operating his own software company.

Interesting, no comments when an articulate teenager makes comments that actually make a ton of sense.

It's good to stack up evidence on this, but our own cursory knowledge and past experience and history can easily spot erroneous bad faith arguments or movements. History already taught us when white people would demand a "white history month", when their supposed "white pride" was actually just bashing people of other races, that wasn't pride, it was racism. It didn't lift anyone up, it didn't help "white people", just put others under their boot. The left's "black lives matter" has the audacity to try and take this very same methodology and use it and club white people. People with an ounce of empathy, social intelligence, and a spine are cognizant of how they treat people, and they don't take any #### from this trashy movement.

It doesn't fit the desired narrative, but those who want whites to feel ashamed even though they have done nothing wrong are not big enough to say so publicly.

Heck, even the diseases created by the whites in China are racist:

It looks like he is in good shape. Just a head shot, but he could be close to 10% body fat. Does that mean he could also make a valid conclusion that obesity is not a societal issue?

I would comment (I actually did give it a read before you posted it fwiw) but what's the point? We'd all start yelling again, and sometimes with the way things are going in my life and the world.. it's exhausting.

Yes, sometimes it is better to just give into the mob.  I get it.

Right? Nothing to do with yuna here, but as far as the political class goes, it's remarkably easy to ride coattails/go with the tradewinds, you notice how people like neocons (the Rubins, Frums, etc.) and such just seamlessly transition to woke like they were Rosa Parks/MLK themselves.

Well c'mon. I'd try and post something, probably lengthy agreeing in parts and strongly disagreeing/critical in others. Then depending on the mood, I'd get some minor agreement or someone would jump all over me. It might be followed by others trying to make their points, likely disagreeing strongly with the article. We'd ultimately end up with no consensus and a lot of yelling/grandstanding that usually happens. And it's stressful, you know? I've got a dog on my lap moaning as he's had some surgery done, and he's miserable. There seems to me to be a mob on all sides these days, but no one actually wants to recognize that it exists. So posting this stuff is fine and all, you can certainly have all right to do so, but don't always expect that people are going to want to stick a toe in the water because it gets tiring after a while.

I hear the two sides argument often, but honestly I don’t see it actually manifested, nor do I see all these corporations bowing down to a mob of capitalist.  The refreshing thing I see here is a teenager actually seeing through all the coddling our country has promoted.  He is right, bullying has always been around, I remember being bullied when I was younger, but back then we were taught to either suck it up, or do something about it.  Nothing has changed as to bullying, but we certainly seem to have changed how to react to it.  I truly feel sorry for the next generation especially if the Marxist prevail.

Hugs and scritches to your doggo. ❤️

Just to add that none of us are obligated to make any replies, or even any follow up replies when we've posted on a topic. Sometimes it's just boring or tiresome. We disagree here, and frequently, but some things are more fun to disagree about. And why are we even posting in here if not to have fun, stretch our minds a bit, interact with those not like us politically/philosophically?
