I'm in the process of getting one but I really really don't want to wait up to a month of not working if possible.

True, you can start working right away, but you need to prove you have applied for a number and our waiting for it per the Social security rules. When you applied they gave you a letter showing you applied, they stamp it with the date you applied, etc. Be sure to show that, or they are not required to hire you. rule is below directly from the SSA....

Do I need to have my number before I start working? We don’t require you to have a Social Security number before you start work. However, the Internal Revenue Service requires employers to use your Social Security number to report your wages. While you wait for your Social Security number, your employer can use a letter from us stating you applied for a number, and your immigration documents can prove your authorization to work in the United States.Employers can find more information online at www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/hiring.htm.

Copy of the letter you need to show your employer. My wife just had the DHS wording removed from her SS card a few days ago, so she has a card, but now has green card so needed a new one, and updated her status with SSA to LPR.

Thanks! You're answers were super helpful! We got this exactly so I'm not scared anymore to keep on applying for jobs, the lady at the office was incredibly helpful and nice and she said that I should get it in a week.

Hopefully so! For me personally, it took a little over one week, too. Some people end up in a manual verification loop where the SSA keeps giving them the run-around. If you don’t receive the card in the 4 weeks mentioned in the notice, definitely go back to the branch and follow it up!

Edit: Looking at your profile, it seems you came on a K-1 visa? Even with an SSN, you cannot work until you receive authorisation to do so (i.e. EAD or GC, as other members have pointed out).

I checked her profile also, EAD was approved on 2-6-2020, she probably has the physical card by now.

Sorry yeah, I got my EAD about a while now, I updated my timeline :)

Is there a website I can check the status of my SSN application or even see if they already sent the card?
