Do I need to submit the original birth certificate or can it be a copy ?

Never sent originals unless they want you too. A copy is fine and you'll bring the original to the interview.

And to combine the 2 responses above......😎

Never sent anything original unless it specifically asks for it. You will not get it back (95% of the time I assume).

Bring the originals with you to the interview.

And from my own personal experience,

Bring the original and an extra copy with you to any and all interviews. You are already collecting paperwork and carrying some extra is not going to hurt you. I saw the importance of this after a bunch of stuff went missing from my file down the line during the ROC and N400 (and most likely even the AOS) stage of the game.

A copy is fine, and as stated above only send originals if specifically asked for originals. It is not unheard of that mail gets lost as well so it would be terrible losing that if something happens to your petition while it is in transit!
