My wife just returned from a trip to Asia.  She re-entered the US using her expired Green card with extension letter....No issues at all.

My wife traveled several times using the extension letter and expired 2 year GC with no issues.  I do suggest you make some copies of the extension letter when you receive it just in case someone (an airline employee for instance) asks to retain a copy, you need the original watermarked letter to show CBP when re-entering the US.  If you plan to be out of the country more than six months, some suggest applying for a re-entry permit prior to departure, but technically, you only need that if gone for more than 12 months.

Hi all. Does anyone know if having  2 year green card what kind of trips are allowed outside of US  ?  Is 6 months cumulative in all 2 years? Or is up to 6 months in 1 year time . Thanks !

There is no real hard or fast rule or limitations as to what kinds of trips you can take.  Functionally, a 2 year GC is the same as the 10yr GC.  Time outside the US only becomes an issue if someone is planning to file for naturalization, or an LPR plans to be outside the US for more than 12 months in any given trip.  Now if someone is using a GC sort of like a B2 visa and only coming to the US occasionally to file for a re-entry permit, that may catch up to them.

@Op; just don't do it. Just wait and send it within 90 days. USCIS doesn't play games so you'll be disappointed when they mail you application right back to you.

Never understood why people are so stubborn about sending their petitions too early. Do they seriously think their petitions will be approved faster just because they sent their petition a couple of days earlier?
