As others noted:

1) A REAL ID DL is optional.

2) Other forms of IDs can be used for federal buildings and domestic flights. Like a passport.

3) A REAL ID DL cannot be used for international flights. You still need a passport (or other international travel document).

Just the passport would work fine. No DL needed (REAL ID or not).

Actually for whooping cough?  Absence of vaccine is 99.5% effective.

Mortality’s about a half percent.  Kills 5 out of a thousand.  Vaccination saves 4 of those 5.

It’s a numbers game.

I never understood the benefit of micro-chipping pets, either---unless the lost cat/dog shows up at a vet somehow, and the animal subsequently scanned for a chip, no one would be the wiser as to whom it belongs to.

A lost pet that is found by somebody is fairly regularly checked for chips. I know a few people who were able to reunite with their lost pets as a result of having them chipped.

Edit: And collars come off. It's not uncommon actually, and a collar-less pet is especially common if the pet escaped the house (e.g. ran out when the door was opened).

Good plan.  My regular Washington state DL expires in October of 2020.  I may upgrade then.

Every shelter and vet checks microchips.  Ive seen too many dead pets or even lost pets where you cant reuinite them.  But 99% of found microchipped pets end up back with their families, somehow.

I guess I''m more thinking of the ones that never end up being "turned in" to a vet or shelter where the chip can be checked--- the ones that end up being strays, or someone else just scoops them up and takes them home without a second thought.

  

My cat is chipped (have to get the 2nd one chipped, still), but it would be nice to be able to track him somehow if he ever did get out. 

 

At his old age, though, he's more likely to look at an open door with disdain and the thought of "Nope.  I'm lucky I was able to get up on the couch today much less travel any further than that."

My state lets you choose if you want a regular one or a REAL ID one still, even if you can qualify for both. The non-compliant one is only valid as an ID for local and state purposes (not federal), and to drive.

REAL ID DLs require additional documentation that some people just don't want to provide or don't have off-hand (i.e. a BC or passport). They still let them use it for driving, though.

Most legal immigrants are in this state, for one reason or another REAL ID compliant and don't actually have to do anything compared to us citizens. My husband was compliant when he first arrived. MD requires everyone to now be in compliance and if you are pulled over and driving with a non compliant license that has been recalled with a prior notice they can actually take it off of you. I've had to pay for at least two new ones, as the first round of notices ended up sending us out cards that were misprinted. Once again this is causing headaches for older people in this state as they struggle through the red tape to obtain qualifying documents.
