Two-time World Cup champion Megan Rapinoe has announced her support for the Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren.

“I truly believe the best things in life are a result of being bold and being real,” wrote the soccer star, whom Sports Illustrated this week named Sportsperson of the Year.

A video accompanying Rapinoe’s tweet showed Warren calling the soccer star.

“Oh my gosh, I can’t even call you by your first name,” said Rapinoe, with a broad smile. “That’s so inappropriate.”

“No it’s not inappropriate!” Warren laughed. “It’s exactly right! And I just wanted to call to say thank you. We need you in this battle.”

Obviously I like Football but have never bought into the role model thingy, why would I be interested in the views of somebody who is good at a sport I like just because they are good at that sport.

My impression has been amongst those who do follow the game she is not liked and has been very detrimental to promoting the game as many who might have supported have been put off by her association, so Warren jumping on board seems both desperation and ineffective.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

My great  great grandpa was from a little known tribe in south ga known as Slapaho. Usually only the big tribes made the history books

So imagine if a brave from your ancestors Slapaho tribe married a squaw from the Rapinhoe tribe...  the family would always be entertained,  and the teepee would always be in order!

I'm really disappointed in how cavalier people seem to be about violence against women here. Jokes about raping and slapping women about to keep them in line just aren't funny to me, sorry.

There's a big difference I think between us making fun of the love swats we give to and get from our significant others, and talking about slapping and raping women. I'm sure this makes me a snowflake to some of you, but think about what a woman who isn't familiar with any of you might think if she happened across this thread. Think about if she were a victim of sexual violence. It isn't very nice or funny. It's just sad. ☹

I don't expect this to make any difference, but it's just my two pennies.

Pretty sure you are the first person to mention raping women.  For shame...

I do intend to pop  out later for a beer, once I  have finished clearing out the snow.

I think a misunderstanding, and a tipple for medicinal purposes only.

If it was a misunderstanding, I apologize. It is how I read "Slapaho" and "Rapinhoe" in your comments, particularly together with this

If there's some other way to read it, accept my apology but it's how it looks to me.

And thus an illustration of why outrage culture is so toxic.

You know, that's not nice. I am a woman, telling you that I don't like jokes about sexual violence against women. I also said that if I was wrong  -- and I'm not convinced I was -- I apologize. Do you think that sexual violence is funny? Do you not think it is worthy of outrage, or at the least the mild expression of disappointment I made?

Jokes about rape aren't funny. Jokes about hitting women aren't funny. What was written here is ambiguous. I could be wrong; my interpretation is not impossible. If I misinterpreted what was said, I apologize. If I did not, I think it's right to say it is wrong.

Jokes about most things are funny, especially when people get offended by them, it only makes it funnier. (<- my opinion)

Also, please don't interpret the above to validate the (also comedic) idea that the post in question way above was a rape joke. It wasn't, but the nature of outrage culture is to pretend anything is done with the worst intentions, employment of authoritarianism to shut things down. Toxic. This is why no one should cater to outrage. It's a toxic appetite that can never be satiated, especially when catered to.

Fitting that this is in a thread about serial SJW Rapinoe.

Two questions then: (1) if it wasn't a rape/slap joke, what was it? (2) Why is it outrage if I was expressing disappointment? Why the hyperbole? (Okay that's three questions.)

I wasn't shutting anything down. I want to be wrong, to have someone tell me not just that I'm wrong, but why I'm wrong. I am asking for dialogue. I have an interpretation that is plausible and it is offensive to me, and likely to others. I also know -- I'm not an idiot  -- that my interpretation could also be right and be hilarious to others. But it is not shutting anything down to say, I don't like this. That is precisely what I said. It is not toxic or authoritarian to say, this is offensive to me. It is disagreement, and I see disagreements as opportunities to understand each other better.

Please don't be rude to me. I'm not being rude. I'm asking for others to see another point of view, and asking for clarification. There's no need for you to call this toxic, or authoritarian.
