Dear all,

I hear and read that of Dec 2 the filing fees for N-400 will increase. However, I see no hard evidence other than a "proposal". What am I missing or overlooking?

Is the fee change already decided upon? I was planning on applying for Naturalization based on 319 (b) but wanted to work on it over December. However, if I am going to pay a lot more just because I waited too long, Id rather try to finish the application by tomorrow.

The previous time they published the proposed fee schedule was May 4, 2016.   It became effective December 23, 2016.

This time the proposed fee schedule was published November 14, 2019.  There is a 30 day comments period which ends midnight December 16, 2019.

Then they have to review all the comments and go through all the usual government procedures to get to a final ruling.

21% increase is pretty big. I just submitted my response. I told them they can double the fees if they can adjucate petitions in half the time they do now. But more money for the same service doesn't make sense to me. I do less work, and I go ask my boss for a raise, and I'll get laughed out of the office.

Here on a K1? Need married and a Certificate in hand within a few hours? I'm here to help. Come to Vegas and I'll marry you Vegas style!!   Visa Journey members are always FREE for my services. Oh they're proposing way worse for the N-400 than the other forms.  The proposal is for an 83% increase to $1,170!

This seems meant to deter residents converting to citizens.

When is this going to take effect? Is it just a proposal for now ? How long it takes them to put it in effect?

It's not clear yet.  The comment period on the proposal ends December 16th.  Then I'm sure it will take a bit of time to follow the rule-making process and give notice.  I'm hoping we manage to file on February 1st before it goes into effect.
