Hi everyone! Can anyone tell me their experiences with the advance parole? How does it work? My husand and I are in the process of his adjustment of status & applying for an Advance Parole. We’re anticipating on going out of the country & would like to know any tips if there are any to make his entry back in the country with no issues. Thanks!!

Advance Parole allows you to travel internationally and come back in to the USA with usually no issues. This allows you to travel without abandoning  the AOS process.

It is by far the exception that somebody is denied entry with a valid AP document. Just don't leave before it is in hand, don't forget it, don't break laws abroad, don't try to smuggle anything in, and you should be perfectly fine.

Also, watch for mail from USCIS to make sure you don't get an RFE/RFIE while abroad and miss the deadline for a response. USPS Informed Delivery (free) can help.

Timelines:

It works. Many thousands people use it. If you have EAD/AP combo card, it’s like a de facto green card.

Couples of comments:

1. Standard CBP procedure when someone shows up with AP is to send them to secondary, where they can verify if your I-485 is still pending before you can be “paroled” in. So do plan for an additional 45 mins or something if you need to make your connection.

2. Some small airline check-in staff at some remote unpopular airport may not know what combo card or AP is and give you a hard time when checking in as they only recognize either a US visa or green card. It may take some times to convince them and they may ask you to sign something to the effect that you will be responsible for the cost of transportation home if you were to be denied entry to the US

On form I-131, when it asks for the Purpose of the trip, is there a right or wrong answer? My husband and I plan to have a religious ceremony outside the US but we don’t know if it’s best to state that reason. We’ve read from other sources to make it sound like an emergency. Please help! :)

Write something generic like “to visit friends and family”. Write something “sounds” like an emergency won’t make you get it any faster as there is a separate process for expedition if you qualify.
