My fiancé is arriving on a K1 visa in October, and he was wondering if there are any good travel/immigration health insurance plans he can purchase.  I have health insurance from my company, but I can't enroll him until we're married.  He doesn't want to be without coverage for the month or so that it'll take us to get married, and wanted to know what his options were.  He will be coming to New Jersey from Japan.  We weren't sure if there are immigration-specific insurances available, or if he can just get a generic travel one.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  Thank you!

There is some crappy cover for new immigrants, best to marry asap.

Agree! 

 

We actually did get one! And OF COURSE we had an accident 2 days after we got here where my son had to go with ambulance to the ER and was checked by specialty doctors. The insurance was of NO help at all!

 

I would also say marry as soon as possible and get him on your insurance.

Temporary insurances and insurance marketed to 'new immigrants' are not ACA compliant, coverage is subpar, and nothing involving pre-existing conditions will be covered. Travel insurances do not apply as he is immigrating and not 'visiting'.

 

My suggestion would be to marry as soon as possible and add him to your coverage. If you still really want to get him insurance beforehand, it's up to you... but you may be paying for something that ultimately proves not useful when you need it.

Also, some companies will let your benefits for your spouse be retroactive to the date of your marriage, which can help shrink the period without health insurance.
