Social Security

Hey everyone, I'm hoping this is in the right thread. As I updated before, I received my Green Card in the mail on 3/9/19. I just want to check, as I received a Social Security number through applying for AOS. It has for work purposes only stamped on it and came with my EAD combo card. Do I need to reapply for a Social Security as it has an expiration date matching my EAD.

if you have your green card in hand you can go in and updated the SS number so that you get a card that does not say for work only on it.

It's not so much reapply. It's update your status with them. They will issue a new card  (same number) that does not have the restriction printed on it.

Ah ok. So as long as I do that before it expires?

Wow never heard of SS card with an expiration date. In that case you may want to get the replacement card as others suggested.

Yeah, this one has ''Valid for work only with DHS Authorization''

all you need to do if you want to is go in and have them update the card, same number just without restrictions.

I know from personal experience as I have rejected people for it per my job, if you try and have credit run and the company see's your SS card reads for work only they will not give you any credit.

That is not the expiration date like you mentioned in your post.

That does not actually state that the card is valid for work only - it indicates that it is valid for work purposes IF you have DHS authorization, from my understanding.  Ie. it is a regular social security card, but you cannot use it for employment unless you also possess DHS authorization to work alongside of it - ie. an EAD.

However, replacing it with a new card should be a simple process - just stop in to a social security office and show them your GC and the current social security card, and you should get a new one sent out to you.
