Traveling to JFK with Father. What is the process?

Hello all,

 

My father's visa was approved for permanent resident. We will be traveling together to JFK. I am not sure if we should use the machine as a family,  with him (i am the US citizen) or should he use another line and not the machine. There is really no clear guide when you arrive. 

 

What should an immigrant entering as permanent resident use? How does it work.

He cannot use the machine if he is entering on an immigrant visa for the first time. He will have to pass through CBP and hand the sealed packet over to the border officer. You can go through the same line with him, it'll be the long line everyone is waiting or possibly a sepearte line for new immigrants depending on the airport, I'm not sure which JFK has.

 

You as the USC could also just go through the machine while he waits in the line by himself, if for some reason you need to get through earlier. Otherwise you can just wait with him and the border officer will possibly interview you both together. At the POE when my husband arrived on his immigrant visa, I was traveling with him and we both just went through the long line together and we were interviewed together.

What the above poster said. You can go with him- it will be the longer line. I went with my husband when he came in on a k1.

He will not have to use the machine. My POE was also JFK and there was a lot of workers that usually direct you to the lines around. You just have to tell one of them that you have you have an immigration package and they will be happy to help you.

How old is your father? Does he have difficulty walking? The reason I ask is for my mom, I requested wheelchair services and basically they can bypass the lines and push her straight to CBP where they can process the immigration package. You can tag along as well.

Thank you all. My father is 70 yrs old. Doesn't speak English so i am a bit worry there. How bad are they? Are the interview difficult.

 Is it better or help if we go together? i get very anxious about these things.
