Airbus SE is halting production of the A380 superjumbo jet, abandoning the $16 billion project after airlines flocked to smaller, nimbler long-range jets.

The airliner was supposed to be Airbus’s answer to rival Boeing Co.’s 747, which brought long-haul travel to the masses and ruled for decades as the undisputed queen of the skies. The A380 represented a view that the future of long-distance commercial aviation would be big jets, shuttling between major hubs.

 

Passengers came to love the plane for its spacious, quiet cabins. Airlines, though, turned instead to a new breed of fuel-efficient smaller jets that gave them the flexibility to fly less popular routes. Sales momentum for the A380 sagged early. Airbus never turned a profit on the plane, and write-offs related to it weighed down the company for years.

Airbus executives long maintained demand would eventually take off, but they became increasingly cautious more recently as big orders continued to elude them. On Thursday, Dubai-based Emirates Airline, the plane’s biggest customer by far, cut sharply its plans to buy more of them. Chief Executive Tom Enders said the Emirates move wiped out any significant backlog for the A380, so the company was left with “no basis to sustain production.”

Airbus said it would make its last A380 in 2021. The program’s termination could lead to as many as 3,500 job cuts or reassignments over the next three years, the company said.

In general, the larger jumbo jets are on the way out across the board. the Boeing Dreamliner is all the rage now for long haul flights and it's mid-size. Great airplane! I love the new shadeless window technology it has.

I flew the dreamliner a while back. I loved the big open area at the rear for stretching etc.

 

Flew back from Korea yesterday on the 747. Still a nice jet. Unlike most i love sitting in the very back. Only 2 seats on that row and room to put stuff between us and the fuselage . The 747 does not have as much open area in the back
