On December 14, I filed an application for SSN, after 6 weeks I got the answer that I can't get SSN because I did not submit the relevant documents and my legal status will end soon. I submitted SS-5, I94, passport + K1 visa, marriage certificate.

On Monday I will go to the SSA to ask what's going on. I have printed the document RM 10211.530 and A-08-07-17044 (still valid?).

AoS is pending so I will take I-797 as well.

Do you have any tips on how to win with officials?

in our case, the guy said something about how he couldnt confirm my fiance in the system and it would take an extra two weeks-- so he predicted four weeks for us. It has been over 6 weeks now (including the holiday) so maybe next week? but we are going to call next week.

let me know if any of you have any additional insight.

Looks like ;)

Incompetence and lack of knowledge. It is easier to say no and counts on the fact that the immigrant will not ask for his rights.

It was the same thing for me, they had to verify my info with the immigrations and it took about 4 weeks before my SSC showed up in my mailbox. I have seen other cases here on VJ that have taken even longer though, 2 months isn't totally uncommon if they have to verify the immigrant's info before handing out a SSN.

The " not in the system" seems like a good excuse for them being lazy. My fiancee came thru POE at LAX on the 20th of November 2018 at 9pm at night, we went to the SS office not even 48hours later to get her SS card. At first the agent said there is no way she is in the system, it has only been 2 days, I said why don't we check instead of guessing ( I tried to say that in the most friendly way possible) he grudgingly got up and went to the computer behind all the windows and came back with a printout and a " I can't believe I was wrong type look". He punched in a few things on the computer and said card is on the way. Received physical card in the mail 2 weeks later. I don't think the employees know that it is now an instant entry into the computer, unless there is a misspelling of the name or number mis-keyed somewhere, there is no reason you are not in the system. I have seen posts where people have applied for their SS card less than 9 hours after arrival and were in the system. I always try to be nice as possible to people like the SS office, DMV, etc. As I do believe you catch more fly's with honey than vinegar, but sometimes you have to throw a little vinegar out there to get things done.

This was a excellent description of what can happen. That's why I always invite those who are in need of information for their SSN that they should go within days and to be sure to have the document RM 10211.530 and A-08-07-17044 with them because most agents don't know how this works for K-1's. It happened to my wife and I too explained and asked them to look and sure enough it was there. Now back then there was a time when you had to wait 2 weeks for the SAVE database to be updated. Now your in the system once you pass a POE stop.

But sometimes it's not about "not being in th system", but actually being in the system but the system not showing the full name. I had that issue, they found me without issues on day 4 after my POE but still had to verify my info with immigrationsprocess because my name's were so long the second middle name had been cut in half at POE, so nothing made sense or matched with my passport. Even my i-94 only showed half my name. So even if they found me in the system they still couldn't hand out a SSN immediately.

When my card finally showed up, my name still wasn't right on it. And all my four name (first, two middles and last) were all together in one long wrong as if it was just one looooong name, and the second middle name was still cut off just like on my i-94. I didn't care much as at least I had a SSN, and once my EAD showed up I went back to the SSA and had the name corrected.

4 weeks is normal. Spoke with couple agents and all confirmed that it's usually within 2-4 weeks window, as K-1 is rare compared to other visas (rare to particular office, can't talk for all), if you file early enough. You can file the next day from arrival into US, it just takes some time to verify with DHS, USCIS your data.
