Hello everyone! Quick question, am trying to help a friend she's from Venezuela and she's here in US for work (her company from Venezuela sent her here for work) but in tourist visa. Now, she wants to take some English classes but they required a SSN, can she get SSN with tourist visa? Thanks to you all!

Wow, her company failed BIG TIME.

Please tell your friend that currently she's in the US illegally and she's also working illegally.  I'd also say report the company.

It could be B1 where some times of work are permitted.  Since it is a B1/B2, some people get confused.

You cannot work on B1 visa. o.O And definitely can't get a SSN.

You can for ex. attend a conference and stuff like that. But any kind of job where you're being paid - big NO. And I don't think that OP is a nanny traveling with some family, since that's like the only exception.

That occurred to me, but the types of business you can do on a B1 visit surely make it unlikely that you will have the time to sign up for an English language course too? (Not to mention how curious it would be to send someone apparently not that proficient in English, to do business for any length of time in the US.)

Was wondering the same thing......i doubt even the CO at the embassy would have issue the tourist visa knowing the individual was going to the US to work. They would have requested he/she go file for the appropriate visa category. Something is very wrong here.

Probably the company wanted to be cheap and not invest in the proper work visa, so they convinced OP's friend that B1 visa is "enough" for work.

Kind of sucks now, because the friend might be acquiring the illegal presence (and later the ban), not to mention illegal work on record.

One does wonder what questions and answers were at the POE, too. I seem to recall I was always asked purpose of visit when entering on a B.

OP hasn't logged in since Sunday to respond to some of the questions raised, or to have the 'Venezuelan friend' join VJ to ask questions.
